A political controversy has erupted after a British reform group pledged to scrap Sikhs’ legal exemption from carrying gram pans in public following a recent murder conviction.The debate was sparked by the case of Vickrum Digwa, 23, who was convicted of murdering 18-year-old university student Henry Nowak in Southampton using a 21cm long kirpan – a ceremonial blade carried by some Sikhs as an item of faith. Digueva’s mother was also convicted of helping to remove the weapon after the attack.Zia Yusuf, chair of the UK Reform Party, said the exemption would be scrapped if the party came to power, arguing that no one except law enforcement officers should be allowed to carry bladed weapons in public.“I don’t care what religion you are. Under a reform government, no one except law enforcement can carry a deadly weapon,” Youssef wrote on X.He said the reforms would scrap legal exemptions for knives and expand stop-and-search powers as part of wider efforts to tackle knife crime.The proposal is backed by senior reformists who believe all weapons should be treated equally under the law regardless of religious exemptions.However, Labor MP Sarah Coombes opposed the call, saying the actions of one person should not be used to justify restrictions on entire faith communities.“Both the Conservatives and the Reform Party are now saying kirpan should be banned. That’s completely wrong,” Coombs said.“The kirpan is an important article of the Sikh faith. The entire community cannot be tarnished by the horrific actions of one person.”The exchange reignited debate over the balance between religious freedom and public safety. Current UK legislation provides for an exemption allowing Sikhs to own and carry chucks in recognition of their religious significance.
