A 21-year-old woman who fell from a 130-foot bridge in Brazil during an unlicensed bungee jump was still alive when rescuers arrived, according to a nurse who rushed to rescue her after the fall.Maria Eduarda Rodríguez de Freitas died Saturday after being launched from the abandoned Skull Bridge near Sao Paulo. Staff failed to properly secure her safety equipment before the jump, leaving her without a bungee cord. The incident was captured on video and later went viral on social media. Video shows three employees lifting Rodriguez de Freitas into position and then pushing her off the bridge. She was wearing a seat belt but no rope.Rayza Dias, an off-duty nurse, was also at the scene. She immediately walked along the steep embankment under the bridge to the injured student.“I scratched my whole hand because there was a steep slope and we only had a rope to climb down,” Dias told the Brazilian TV show “Domingo Espetara.”“There was mud everywhere. I kept going down, down, down,” she said, adding that Rodriguez de Freitas was still alive when she reached her.“I even had a conversation with her. I have a habit of joking, ‘Nobody dies on my watch.'”I told her, ‘Duda [Eduarda]no one died while I was on duty. “Even though I wasn’t on duty there,” she said.Emergency medical teams were dispatched to the scene, but Rodriguez de Freitas later died from his injuries. A military police helicopter has also been dispatched for rescue. The incident occurred during a bungee jumping trip, which included a guided hike and jumping from a decommissioned bridge about 130 feet high.Authorities have since launched a criminal investigation into the operators who carried out the activity.Following the deaths, six people were taken to Limeira police station for questioning. Three men, aged 27, 32 and 42, remain arrested on suspicion of reckless homicide, which prosecutors say occurs when a person knows their actions could result in death. After the incident, the two suspects tried to escape and were later hunted down with the assistance of a military helicopter. Three other people linked to the site were detained but later released without charge.Lawyers for the three arrested men told The National newspaper that event organizers were experienced in organizing bungee jumps and that this was the first death after many years of such activities. However, local authorities said the group lacked the necessary qualifications and did not have the authority to carry out activities on the bridge.
