Dame Parveen Kumar, a renowned gastroenterologist, medical educator and advocate for women’s healthcare, has been awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE), one of the UK’s highest royal honours, in King Charles III’s 2026 Birthday Honors List.The GBE is the highest rank among the Most Excellent Orders of the British Empire and is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to public life and society. Kumar is recognized for his contributions to medical education and health worldwide.
Medical and Educational Careers
Kumar is Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Education at Barts College and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London, where he has spent decades shaping medical education in the UK and internationally.She is best known as the co-founder and author of Kumar and Clark Clinical Medicine, one of the most widely used medical textbooks in the world. This publication has served as an important learning resource for generations of medical students and healthcare professionals in multiple countries.During her career, Kumar held a number of influential leadership positions within the UK medical community. As chair of the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund, she helped raise £100,000 and was instrumental in setting up a confidential support line for doctors facing personal and professional difficulties.She also served as President of the Royal Society of Medicine, launching a global health initiative to expand international collaboration and healthcare education. At the Royal College of Physicians, she worked as a senior examiner helping to develop educational programs for medical professionals.Now in his early 80s, Kumar remains active in health care policy and advocacy. She co-chairs the British Medical Journal’s Commission on the Future of the National Health Service and serves as ambassador for the UK Climate Change Health Alliance.
