Gunmen opened fire in an informal settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg, South Africa, killing at least 12 people and injuring nine others.The South African Police Service said officers responded to reports of shots fired at Jumpers informal settlement at around 11.10pm on Tuesday and found multiple victims at various locations in the area.Eight men and three women were pronounced dead at the scene. Another victim later died in hospital. According to Reuters, the injured were sent to hospital for treatment. More than 10 suspects were allegedly taken to the settlement in a white Toyota Quantum vehicle, police said. The attackers reportedly entered through two entrances and moved through the community, shooting at residents before fleeing in the same vehicle.“More than 10 suspects were allegedly dropped off in a white Toyota Quantum near a gas station in Cleveland,” police said in a statement.The motive for the attack is unclear and no arrests have been made yet. Authorities have launched a manhunt and are appealing to the public for information.South Africa continues to face high levels of violent crime, with one of the highest murder rates in the world.
