In closing arguments, the state urged jurors to focus on Metcalf because his life ended too soon.
“Austin Metcalf is a son. Austin Metcalf is a brother,” prosecutors said. “… I’m going to ask you to consider the age of the victim in this case… No matter what you do with your sentencing, no matter what you do, Carmelo Anthony will not have a greater impact on Carmelo Anthony than it will on the Metcalf family… Austin Metcalf didn’t get the chance to see the love of his life, hold up a plaque at graduation.”
Anthony almost kept his head down as Metcalf’s family read victim impact statements.
According to the New York Post, Hunter Metcalfe, the victim’s twin brother, choked up and said: “You took a son, a brother, a friend, my best friend from this world. You took from me a man who was supposed to be an uncle, a godfather to my children. Now I want to take everything from you.”
