California gubernatorial race results: County-by-county live map

Track the 2026 California gubernatorial primary results.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Two candidates for California governor will emerge from a field of 61 candidates in Tuesday’s state primary.

The race to replace Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is crowded. Newsom’s second term ends in January.

Voters will see dozens of names on the ballot, but candidates with the strongest showings include Xavier Becerra, Steve Hilton, Tom Steyer, Chad Bianco, Katie Porter, Matt Mahan, Tony Thurmond and Antonio Villaraigosa.

Notably, candidates like former Reps. Eric Swalwell and Betty Yee have dropped out of the race but are still on the ballot.

California has a nonpartisan primary, meaning registered voters can vote in Tuesday’s primary regardless of party affiliation.

California elections, also known as “jungle primaries,” are unique in that the state often holds general election ballots with either two Democratic candidates or two Republican candidates, with the top two candidates regardless of party advancing to the November runoff.

Voting in the Golden State ends at 8 p.m. PDT.
