Iranian missile attack on Kuwait base damages U.S. drone, injures Americans: report

Bloomberg reported, citing an unnamed person familiar with the matter, that an Iranian ballistic missile attacked a U.S. military facility in Kuwait, causing damage to two MQ-9 Reaper drones and causing minor injuries to several U.S. personnel.According to reports, Fateh-110 missiles have targeted Ali Salem Air Base in Kuwait in the past 24 hours. Although Kuwait’s air defense system intercepted the missile, fragments still fell into the base.According to reports, in a recent attack, one MQ-9 Reaper drone was destroyed and another was seriously damaged. These drones are worth about $30 million each.At least five people, including U.S. service members and contractors, were slightly injured in the incident. The attack comes as the White House considers the possibility of extending the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran. The meeting in the White House Situation Room ended without any public announcement, although US President Donald Trump earlier said he was ready to make a “final decision” on the preliminary deal.A few days ago, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted a U.S. air base in the region after the United States launched a new round of attacks in southern Iran. While Kuwait confirmed it had intercepted what it described as “hostile missile and drone threats,” it did not identify the intended target. The missile launches followed U.S. military action against Iranian assets. The U.S. military shot down an Iranian drone over the Strait of Hormuz and attacked a military base in Iran’s southern strategic port city of Bandar Abbas, according to U.S. officials. The latest hostilities have raised new concerns about the stability of the fragile U.S.-Iran ceasefire that has been in place since April, as the conflict between Washington and Tehran enters its fourth month and talks are underway to extend it.Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the attack targeted the “source” of the United States’ early actions against Iran. U.S. Central Command (Centcom) called Iran’s attack on Kuwait a “serious violation of the ceasefire agreement.”Central Command said the incident occurred hours after Iranian forces launched five one-way attack drones near the Strait of Hormuz. According to the U.S. military, all five drones were intercepted, as was a sixth drone launched from a ground control station in Bandar Abbas Port. The U.S. military said its actions were “cautious, purely defensive, and designed to maintain the ceasefire.”Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Barkay condemned the U.S. attack, calling it a violation of the ceasefire agreement. He said Iran would “take all necessary measures to defend its national sovereignty,” state broadcaster IRIB reported.Kuwait’s foreign ministry also condemned what it called “Iran’s criminal attacks on its territory.”
