Manchester United breaks tradition and releases 2026/27 home jersey
Manchester United Football Club has officially announced its new home jersey for the 2026/27 season. The club also confirmed that it will wear this jersey before the end of the season, breaking a long-standing tradition at Old Trafford. The new strip, inspired by some of Manchester United’s iconic kits from the 1970s, will debut this weekend before returning again on the final day of the season as the club prepares for a return to the Champions League.
Manchester United unveils retro-inspired design to pay homage to 1977 FA Cup winner
Fans got their first look at the new jersey on Wednesday, when a huge promotional banner appeared outside Old Trafford overlooking the stadium’s forecourt. The jersey is subsequently officially released through Fanatics and other retailers including Kitbag, Sports Direct and the Manchester United official store, with prices starting at £85 for adult shirts and £55 for children’s versions. Adidas has styled the shirt in a clean red base with black and white detailing, while the classic Three Stripes return along the sleeves as part of the manufacturer’s modern template. Although discreet at first glance, the design heavily references the kits worn by Manchester United in the mid-1970s, particularly the kits used when the club won the 1976/77 FA Cup season under Tommy Docherty. The team beat rivals Liverpool 2-1 in the FA Cup final, with all three goals scored in a chaotic four-minute period in the second half. The new jersey was released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this victory. The original Admiral shirt from that era featured a striped polo collar and cuffs, elements that adidas have now reworked into a more modern design. Narrow stripes appear on the turn-over collar and cuffs, and a small “Manchester United” banner has been added above the player’s name on the back of the shirt. in a statement Adidas said in a release: “Inspired by the 1970s, a clean red base allows the iconic polo collar and striped cuffs to take center stage, bringing a sophisticated and unmistakable Manchester United look to the pitch. “The collar design, combined with subtle striped detailing, references the kit worn when the club won the FA Cup in 1977 – marking the 50th anniversary of this historic moment. “This connection to the past is balanced with modern construction to create a jersey that is both nostalgic and progressive.” The full kit includes white shorts and black socks, maintaining the club’s traditional tones.
New technology and Champions League return drive Adidas deal
The jersey also features adidas’ latest CLIMACOOL+ technology, designed to improve ventilation and moisture management for players during matches. According to the manufacturer, the jersey includes perforated Three-Stripes tape and specially positioned mesh areas designed to provide better breathability while helping players stay dry for longer. In the new season, Manchester United will also return to the Champions League, and Adidas payments in the club’s sponsorship agreement will be restored to the highest level. United’s contract with Adidas reportedly includes a £10m deduction for seasons in which the club fails to qualify for the Champions League, meaning their return to Europe’s top competition has additional financial importance beyond football itself.
Manchester United will wear next season’s kit before the end of this season
The new kit will be officially unveiled for the first time on Saturday when Manchester United Women take on Chelsea Women at Stamford Bridge in the final Women’s Super League match of the season. Michael Carrick’s men will make their first-team debut against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Sunday. The club are also expected to wear the jersey again on the final day of their away game against Brighton. The decision marks a significant shift for United, who traditionally wait until the start of the new season to unveil and wear their next home kit. In recent years, clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool And Chelsea Football Club are increasingly unveiling next season’s kits in the final weeks of the season, but this will be the first time United have taken the same approach. The Nottingham Forest game could also have extra significance as it could be Brazilian midfielder Casemiro’s last appearance at Old Trafford in a United shirt.
Fans are divided over first impressions
After the official launch, supporters were quick to react on social media, with mixed opinions on the minimalist retro-inspired look. One fan wrote on X: “Beautiful. The Champions League batch will look great.” Another supporter added: “I love this. Looks clean and smooth.” However, not everyone was entirely convinced by the design, with one fan joking: “It took the designers at Adidas about 10 minutes to come up with this, eh?” Another United supporter still supported the overall aesthetic, writing: “Clean kit. United always play different colors with red.”
