BEMIDJI, Minn. — A Bemidji, Minnesota, teen accused by a teen petition of fatally shooting his parents last week told police he became “angry” after they revoked his cellphone access.
In addition to his parents, the 16-year-old shot and wounded a bystander during the May 7 incident, the petition states. He was charged with possession of a handgun by a person under 18; first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.
Law enforcement officers arrived at an apartment complex in the area of 2500 NW Itasca Loop in Bemidji and found the teen’s mother lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound to her abdomen, according to Beltrami County prosecutors. She told arriving police her son was angry about not being able to use his cell phone and then shot her and her husband, the complaint states. She added that her son also shot another person who was in the parking lot at the time of the incident.
The boy’s father and a bystander suffered gunshot wounds to their legs, and both required the use of tourniquets, according to court documents. The three were in stable condition at the scene and were later transferred to a nearby hospital.
The teen later turned himself in at the police station and allegedly admitted to the shooting and that he obtained the gun without his parents’ knowledge, the petition states.
Prosecutors said police found the handgun under a pile of leaves near Bemidji Middle School.
The suspect’s identity has not been released due to his age.
