Legg will attempt to become the sixth driver and first female driver to attempt a “double,” competing in the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.
INDIANAPOLIS — Katherine Legg won’t just try to compete for a fifth time Indianapolis 500 On May 24, she plans to launch an attack on racing history.
The veteran driver’s goal is to become the first woman to complete a “double” – racing the Indianapolis 500 in the afternoon and then facing off against the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the evening.
Legge’s main sponsor elf Cosmetics announces history in press release early Wednesday.
“Very few riders get the chance to try out the ‘Double’ and I don’t take that opportunity lightly,” Legge said in a press release. “The challenge is to push the limits of perception, bet on yourself, take risks and try to do something unique. I’m so grateful to elf for believing in what this moment represents and building a community around it.”
Only five drivers – John Andretti, Kurt Busch, Robbie Gordon, Kyle Larson and Tony Stewart – attempted to compete in both races on the same day. Stewart, a native of Columbus, Indiana, is the only driver to complete the entire 1,100 miles of both races in one day. In 2001, he accomplished the feat, finishing sixth at Indianapolis and third at Charlotte.
Larson has attempted a double each of the past two years, but after finishing 18th in the rain-delayed 2024 Indy 500, he was unable to make it to Charlotte before the rain-delayed Coca-Cola 600.
Last year, Larson lost control in Turn 2 at IMS and crashed on Lap 92 of the 500-mile race. After flying to Charlotte, he crashed on Lap 246 of the NASCAR nightcap.
Legg has competed in eight races in the NASCAR Cup Series over the past two years, including seven last year. She finished 35th in her only Cup race of the year at Watkins Glen on Sunday. In 2025, she finished 17th in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
She first ran the Indianapolis 500 in 2012, finishing 22nd. Legge was also selected in 33 games with Indianapolis in 2013, 2023 and 2024.
The Guilford, England, native will try to secure his spot in the Indianapolis 500 when qualifying begins on Saturday, May 16. The 15 fastest drivers on Saturday will return on Sunday, May 17, to try to put their cars on the pole for the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 a week later.
Qualifying for the Coca-Cola 600 is scheduled for Saturday, May 23 at 2:40 p.m.
