Amazon confirmed the long-awaited romance adaptation at an advance press event on Monday, with “Westworld” co-creator Lisa Joy set to direct the pilot.
After nearly three years in development, The Fourth Wing is finally coming to television.
Prime Video announced on Monday that it has adapted Rebecca Yarros’ best-selling Dragoon novels into a series, with the news coming at Amazon’s upfront event in New York City.
Executive producer and Oscar-winner Michael B. Jordan announced the news onstage, then introduced fellow executive producer Lisa Joy, who will direct the first episode.
“The Fourth Wing” is adapted from Jarosz’s romantic novel “The Empyrean” series, telling the story of 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail who was forced by her general mother to join the cruel and deadly Basghis War Academy and become a dragon knight of the Kingdom of Navarre.
Yaros’ Empyrean series begins with The Fourth Wing, released in May 2023, followed by Iron Flame in November 2023 and Onyx Storm in January 2025. A total of five books are planned for the series.
“Fourth Wing” became a viral phenomenon among TikTok’s “BookTok” community and stayed at the top of the New York Times bestseller list for 18 weeks.
The series will air exclusively on Prime Video. No casting or premiere date has yet been announced.
Jordan’s Outlier Society production company, Jonathan Nolan and Joy’s Kilter Films and Premeditated Productions are involved in the production. Meredith Averill, known for “The Haunting of Hill House,” will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Joy, co-creator of HBO’s “Westworld,” will direct the pilot. Author Rebecca Yarros will serve as executive producer.
“We’re building a cinematic universe,” Joy said at Amazon’s upfront presentation on Monday, with the goal of “giving fans the series they deserve.”
“Rebecca’s books have become one of the best-selling series of the 21st century, with fans so passionate and so loyal that they not only read the books but live them,” Averill said. “The emotional stakes are extremely high, the battles are epic, the power dynamics are thrilling, and there’s so much humor, heart and romance underneath that it will swallow you whole.”
The project first entered development in October 2023 and stalled until Averill joined as showrunner last September.
