North Shore School Board ends Bothell High School’s school resource officer program

The North Shore School Board voted to oust its only school resource officer, ending a 30-year program at Bothell High School.

Bothell, Wash. — North Shore School Board votes to cancel sole school resource officer in the area Monday night.

The program has been at Bothell High School for more than 30 years.

According to the City of Bothell website, the job of a school resource officer (SRO) is to “build positive relationships among police, students and staff while promoting a safe and welcoming school environment.” Bothell police said the officer had helped teenagers deal with abuse in relationships and families.

The website states that the current SRO was selected to serve Bothell High School in 2017.

But opponents of the plan argue that armed police on campus make some students feel unsafe.

Starting next school year, the resource officer position will be eliminated.

By law, the North Shore School Board must review the SRO agreement annually. In 2025, two members voted to eliminate the position for the first time.
