ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar discussed the situation in West Asia and Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts for peace and stability in the region with his Iranian counterpart Saeed Abbas Araqchi, officials said on Monday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Dar and Arachi had a telephone conversation late Sunday night.
“The discussion focused on the regional situation and Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts for peace and stability in the region,” the statement said.
Araghchi appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role and efforts in mediating between relevant parties.
Dar, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister, reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to promoting constructive engagement, stressing that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable ways to resolve issues peacefully and achieve lasting peace and stability in the region and beyond.
It comes after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday he was reviewing a new Iranian proposal aimed at ending the conflict, while casting doubt on the prospects of a deal.
According to reports, Iran has put forward 14-point proposals through Pakistan in response to the United States’ 9-point proposal.
Pakistan is mediating peace talks between the United States and Iran.
The war with Iran, triggered by a joint US-Israeli strike on February 28, has been on hold since April 8, following a round of peace talks in Islamabad.
Pakistan hosted the first round of direct talks between Iran and the United States in Islamabad on April 11, but the two sides failed to reach an agreement to end the war.
On April 21, Trump indefinitely extended a two-week ceasefire with Iran to give Tehran more time to prepare a unified proposal to end the war, just hours before the truce was set to expire.
