London stabbings labeled ‘terror incident’
London’s Metropolitan Police have arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with a stabbing attack that injured two Jewish men in the north London suburb of Golders Green, an incident that authorities have now labeled a “terror incident”.The suspect, a British national born in Somalia, was detained on suspicion of attempted murder after being discharged from hospital and remains in police custody.Police said the victims, aged 76 and 34, both suffered stab wounds but were treated at the scene and taken to hospital in stable condition. The area has a large Jewish population and has been the scene of a series of anti-Semitic incidents in recent weeks.
Anti-terrorism investigation is ongoing
Metropolitan Police Assistant Chief Constable Lawrence Taylor said counter-terrorism officials were investigating whether the attack deliberately targeted the Jewish community.Commissioner Mark Rowley described it as an “attack on British Jews” and noted that the suspect had a serious history of violence and mental health problems.Video released by police showed officers confronting the suspect, using stun guns and disarming him after he refused to show his hands, raising concerns that he might be carrying an explosive device.
Leaders condemn ‘anti-Semitic attacks’
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident as “completely shocking” and anti-Semitic, saying “an attack on our Jewish community is an attack on Britain”.London Mayor Sadiq Khan also condemned the violence and pledged to increase police presence in the area.Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis called for “meaningful action” and warned that words alone were no longer enough as fear grew within communities.
Rising anti-Semitic incidents cause alarm
Authorities and community leaders point to a sharp increase in anti-Semitic incidents across the UK since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out in late 2023.Nearly 3,700 incidents were recorded last year, more than double the previous year’s figure, according to the Community Safety Trust.Officials also warned that some individuals may be influenced by or supported by hostile foreign actors, raising broader national security concerns.Jonathan Hall, the independent terrorism watchdog, described the situation as the “biggest national security emergency” since a wave of attacks in 2017.
Government announces £25m extra funding
In response, the British government announced an additional £25 million in funding to strengthen the security of Jewish communities, The Independent reported. The package will support increased police patrols and protective measures at synagogues, schools and community centres.Security Minister Dan Jarvis said legislation would also be stepped up to target individuals acting as agents of state-sponsored groups under the National Security Act.
A series of recent attacks has heightened tensions
There were a number of stabbings in Golders Green, including an arson attack on an ambulance linked to the Jewish Voluntary Emergency Service and another alleged arson attack on a wall of remembrance. The incidents have heightened anxiety among residents of the area, where nearly half of the population of 15,000 are Jewish.Community groups reported the suspect was seen trying to stab passers-by before being arrested.
