The shooting occurred at Swedish Endeavor Health Hospital.
“We are devastated by the loss of a CPD officer killed in the line of duty, and our thoughts and prayers go out to another officer who was shot and fought for his life. These officers selflessly put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect the public. Words cannot fully express our gratitude for their sacrifice, nor the depth of the loss,” the Illinois State Police wrote on the X, offering prayers and support to “our CPD partners and officers’ families, now and forever.”
The names of the dead and injured officers have not yet been released. Chicago Police Chief Larry Snelling said the slain officer, 38, was a 10-year veteran of the department.

On the other hand, the injured officer was 57 years old and a 21-year veteran of the department.
What we know about the shooting
The shooting occurred around 11 a.m. at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital in the Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago’s North Side. Snelling said officials had just transported one person for “observation,” NBC News reported.
Chicago Police Department recordings show one of the officers was shot in the head.
“One of the officers was shot and seriously injured and has been declared, the second officer is now fighting for his life in the hospital behind us and we ask that your prayers be with the families of these officers,” Snelling said.
A suspect is in custody and a weapon has been recovered. The investigation is ongoing.
Endeavor Health said in a statement that the suspect was taken to the hospital emergency room for treatment at 9 a.m. “The individual later fired at law enforcement officers and then left the hospital building. He was arrested and remains in custody,” the hospital said.

Snelling did not say why the person was taken to the hospital. He explained that sometimes, when police take someone into custody, “we want to make sure that if they have a disease or something of that nature, we’re getting them treatment.”
The hospital confirmed that no team members or patients were injured in the incident.
The hospital remained closed on the afternoon of Saturday, April 25. The blockade was lifted around 2 p.m. local time, NBC Chicago reported.
