Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited the Ottawa Gurdwara Sahib on Saturday (local time) to engage in community service with members of the Sikh community as part of Sikh Heritage Month 2026 celebrations.Carney shared details and video of his visit on “Canada has the second largest Sikh community in the world. During this Sikh Heritage Month, we celebrate generations of Canadian Sikh men and women who have contributed to our shared prosperity, strengthened our communities and helped build a stronger Canada,” he said.

A series of cultural and community-led events will be held across the country to mark Sikh Heritage Month. This year’s celebrations include the launch of an exhibition called Baaghi ja Badshah, which explores key phases of Sikh history, portraying the Sikh community as rebels and leaders fighting for a just and ethical society, news agency ANI reported.The exhibition reflects Halemi Raj’s Sikh philosophy, a vision centered on equity, justice and ethical governance.
Diaspora event highlights cultural ties between India and Canada
Earlier on April 13, the Indian Consulate in Toronto celebrated Vaisakhi festival in collaboration with Virasat-e-Khalsa on the occasion of Sikh Heritage Month. The event brought together Indian diaspora and community leaders to highlight the cultural ties between India and Canada.High Commissioner Dinesh K Patnaik described the diaspora as a “living thread” connecting the two countries, while Consul General Mahaveer Singhvi highlighted the global resonance of Visakist and Sikh traditions.The celebrations featured traditional Bhangra and Gidda performances, live music and a performance by Dhadhi Vaaran, showcasing Sikh values of courage, faith and community.Sikh Heritage Month, held each April, recognizes the contributions of Sikhs in Canada and the role they play in shaping the social and cultural fabric of the country.
