Others are sounding the alarm, too. WCIA-3 Meteorologist shared “Confirmed tornadoes are moving toward Macomb and the Western Illinois University campus. If you know someone like this, tell them to take shelter now! The storm is still to our west, but is clearly quite strong.”
Urbana Mayor DeShawn Williams warn “Please seek shelter immediately and stay safe. We have a tornado warning in effect until 10:30 p.m.”

Another person shared a photo of a tornado from Lena. “This is another tornado we recorded in northern Illinois this afternoon. This tornado entered the town of Lena, IL at approximately 3:45 pm and caused significant damage,” they wrote.
People expressed concerns online. “It’s crazy! It’s so windy,” one person said commented. a worried person point out “My family lives in Mattoon, Illinois, I have employees who live in Mattoon, Illinois, and they have to work in Mattoon, Illinois, and then some of my family members live in Charleston, Illinois, and some of my employees live in Charleston, Illinois, so I have to tell them to be careful because of the weather outside right now.”
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign: Tornado Safety
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is also under a tornado watch. This is college project Safe spaces have been marked. “Designated tornado shelters for Newmark Laboratories and Water Systems Laboratories are located in the basements of the buildings. Please take a moment to determine the quickest route to the designated areas within the buildings,” the page read.
On the subject of campus advisories, it states “When Champaign County is under a tornado watch, advisories will be posted on radio and television. The campus telephone alert system will be activated during any tornado watch status during business hours. We will contact each department; this may not include each individual building.”
“If a tornado is detected in the area, we will attempt to notify each area by phone. However, we urge you to use your best judgment when deciding to shelter. If you are concerned about your safety, please shelter,” a message from the university further reads.
