North Unguja district police commander Benedict Mapujira said hotel staff intervened and separated the couple into separate rooms after an argument broke out. The situation reportedly prompted staff to alert local authorities and file a report with Nungwe Police Station.
Police said Jayna was later found unresponsive in her villa and taken to hospital, where she died the next day.
While early reports suggested suicide may have been the cause, officials have not yet issued a confirmed ruling. Authorities insist the case remains an active investigation.
Family seeks clarification
Jayna’s family disputed the initial account of the cause of death. Her father said that while early police reports were suicide, no formal decision had been made.
He added that the family was in contact with officials, including the U.S. Embassy and a funeral director, seeking more information about the circumstances of her death.
