Real heroes: Vietnamese man, 20, saved 7 lives after climbing into burning building

Nguyen Le Tu, a 20-year-old student in Hanoi, is being hailed a hero after he rescued seven people from a burning building in a dramatic late-night incident. On March 24, 2026, Tu, a student at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, was returning home from the gym when he noticed flames and thick smoke coming from a six-story residential building in Linh Nam area. He then relied on instinct, courage and coolness to enter the burning building without protective gear and then made a series of split-second decisions that saved multiple lives.

According to reports, the fire broke out at night and smoke quickly spread to multiple floors. Visibility dropped rapidly and several residents were trapped inside with no clear way out.Smoke poses the greatest danger as it can disorientate the occupants and restrict breathing for several minutes. Without immediate access to the fire exit, those inside were in serious danger.Recognizing the dangers of entering through the main entrance, Tu climbed onto the roof to find an alternative entrance. Finding an opening, he forced his way in, making his way through the smoky interior. To cope, he used a waterlogged shirt as a makeshift breathing filter, allowing him to stay in it longer. He then made several trips to guide residents, including the elderly, women and children, to safety. In thick smoke with limited visibility, he relied on quick judgment to find people and get them out. The dangers increase with every trip, as prolonged exposure to smoke and heat can quickly become fatal.

Casualties caused by rescue

By the time emergency crews got the situation under control, Tu had rescued seven people. However, this effort comes at a cost.He suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital. This exposure can cause serious respiratory problems due to reduced levels of toxic gases and oxygen. After treatment, his condition later stabilized.

Humble response surprises many

What makes this story even more compelling is Mr. Tu’s reaction afterwards. Instead of sharing what he did, he chose to downplay it.While talking to his mother, he said he “tripped” and needed medical attention, but made no mention of rescue. His family and the public at large did not learn the truth until he appeared in national news reports the next day. After media reports, Tu was widely praised across Vietnam. His actions were recognized by authorities and youth organizations, and he was awarded the “Brave Youth” badge and other honors. On social media, many described him as a symbol of courage and selflessness, with his humility receiving as much attention as the rescue itself.
