For a long time, home cleaning followed a set rhythm. Our nanny comes in every morning, sweeps, mops, and gets things organized before the day really starts. It does work, but there are some minor issues. Sometimes the hours don’t match the demands of my job, sometimes the cleaning feels rushed, and some days, the cleaning doesn’t happen at all.
Over time, I realized how dependent I had become on this routine. So when I got the chance to try out the Dreame D20 Ultra robot vacuum, my idea wasn’t to completely replace housekeeping, but to see how much of the daily cleaning work it could actually take over.
Its claimed 13,000Pa suction power, self-cleaning mop, and up to 100 days of hands-free use sound impressive on paper. But the real question is simple – does it really make life easier for the average family?
My family settings and expectations
I live in a standard 2BHK apartment with tiled flooring, which tends to accumulate dust very quickly, especially considering the air quality in Delhi NCR. Even if you clean in the morning, you’ll see a noticeable layer of dirt by night. Corners and under furniture are often neglected areas unless someone puts in the extra effort.
Having said that, my expectations were pretty basic. I didn’t expect it to deep clean as well as a human, but I did expect it to be able to handle everyday dust, hair, and light dirt without needing constant supervision.
What I’m not sure about is how well it handles corners, whether it will get stuck around furniture, and whether I’ll end up spending more time managing the robot than actually saving time.

First impressions: unboxing and what’s inside the box
Setting up the vacuum is easy and a little fun (more on that below).
The unboxing itself was exciting but not complicated. There’s not much to figure out, which is a relief. The mop pad comes pre-assembled, so you don’t really need to assemble any major parts. In the box you’ll find the robot vacuum, base station, side brush, mop pad holder, pre-installed mop pad, dust bag, base station ramp extension and the usual user manual.
All I really had to do was set up the ramp expansion board for the base station, plug everything in, and turn it on. That’s it.

The next step is to connect it via the Dreamehome app. The app feels full-featured and fairly simple, especially if you’re familiar with basic cleaning terminology. It does take some time to understand features like area clearing, scheduling, and different modes, which can be overwhelming for first-time users. After the initial setup, it becomes a simple point-and-click experience.
Now comes the somewhat interesting part. The moment I turned it on, it started mapping the house on its own. It walked around slowly, scanning each room and figuring out the layout. It’s oddly interesting to watch it do this. It would pause around chair legs, reconsider its path near wires, sometimes taking a second to decide where to go next.
There were also times when it struggled a bit, especially when trying to find its way back to the dock. It’s very interesting to see this small, round device “solve problems” on its own.
The first few days without housekeeping
For the first few days, I decided to rely solely on the robot vacuum to clean my floors. No manual sweeping, no mopping, just to see how it performs in a real-world setup.
I usually schedule it in the morning. It starts cleaning on its own and you don’t really have to think about it afterwards. Surprisingly, the noise level is only noticeable when you set it to the highest suction power. In Quiet or Standard mode, you may not be disturbed by sound.
Watching it move around furniture is impressive thanks to its 3DAdapt obstacle avoidance feature. It handles open areas well, although it sometimes gets stuck around dining chairs or tighter spaces, but since it’s a machine, that’s a given. There were a few instances where it got stuck on the cable or struggled around the edge of the carpet.
That said, the convenience of just pressing a button (or scheduling it) starts to feel real. I don’t have to think about cleaning, it just happens in the background. Plus, you don’t even have to be in the house. If the switch is on, you can operate it from any position.
One thing I noticed is how organized it is. It doesn’t rush, but covers areas in a planned pattern, which actually makes cleaning feel more consistent than manual sweeping on busy days.
Dreame D20 Ultra: Real-life cleaning performance
For everyday dust, it does a really good job. Living in Delhi, there is always a fine layer of dust left on the floor even if you have cleaned it in the morning. I notice this most when I’m walking barefoot at night, there’s usually a slight gritty feel, but on days when the vacuum has gone through a full cycle, the floors feel noticeably cleaner. It’s not something you see immediately, but you do feel the difference.
Once, I ran as soon as I opened the window in the morning, and in the afternoon, the floor felt relatively clean. On busy days, manual cleaning sometimes misses this consistency.
However, corners and edges are where you start to see limitations. It does come close to the wall, but not as deep as a broom. I noticed this in the corners of my bedroom and around the TV, and if you look closely after a few days, there is still some dust accumulation. It’s not very obvious from a distance, but it’s there.
For hair, especially long hair, the performance is decent, but not perfect. Most were picked up during the main cleaning cycle, but I did find a few strands left near corners or under the bed. On one occasion, a small patch of hair near the dresser was not picked up on the first pass, but was cleared on the next scheduled run.
In the kitchen, it handles dry crumbs and everyday messes well. Things like cookie crumbs, small food particles, or attar dust are easy to clean up. In fact, anything sticky, like a drop of tea or a small spill, can also be properly cleaned. It may not come clean in one mop, but it will sparkle on the second or third mop.
The mopping function is useful, but it’s more about maintenance. It keeps the floor looking fresh and reduces the slightly dull appearance after a day or two. I tried running it after a minor spill in the kitchen, and while it did clean the area, it wasn’t as thorough as mopping by hand.
Overall, the experience is more like having a system that you keep clean every day rather than a complete replacement for deep cleaning. You may want to do manual cleaning once a week, but I’m fine with regular cleaning.
How has my daily life actually changed?
After a few days, the biggest change I noticed was mental. I no longer have to fit cleaning around my schedule.
Earlier, there was a bit of a rush in the morning, coordinating time and making sure the house was ready for cleaning. With the robot vacuum, I can just schedule it and forget about it.
It also helps maintain consistency. Even on days when you’re feeling lazy or busy, cleaning can still get done. That said, I haven’t completely stopped feeling the need for a deeper cleanse. For example, every few days I still want to do a proper mop or hand clean the corners.
Dream House App
The Dreamehome app really offers a lot of convenience. Once you get familiar with it, you’ll realize you don’t have to do much manual management.
You can tailor cleaning to your home setup, whether that’s flooring type, specific rooms, or areas with carpets and rugs. The vacuum automatically adjusts its cleaning method to the surface, which makes it feel a little more intuitive for daily use.
You also have the flexibility to choose how you clean it. You can run a whole-house cleaning cycle, select just one room, or even target a small area if there’s a spill or mess somewhere. This method has come in handy a few times when I don’t want to run the entire cycle and just clean up the kitchen after cooking.
You can also control the cleaning intensity: Basic, Standard or Maximum, depending on how dirty your floors are. Standard mode works fine for the most part, but having the option to increase power is also useful.
Another thing I like is the ability to choose between vacuuming, mopping, or both. By default, it runs a combined cleaning cycle, but you can easily change this in the app if you want.
From the actual use point of view, there are several outstanding features
- Application control and scheduling are very useful. Being able to run it while walking out or setting a set time feels effortless.
- Auto-docking and self-cleaning features are another plus. You don’t have to empty it after each use, which adds convenience.
- Navigation, while not perfect, is mostly solid. It learns the layout of the house over time, but occasional hiccups are part of the experience.
As for the features that feel less important, some advanced app controls and customization are nice, but not something you’ll use every day.
Can the Dreame D20 Ultra replace your nanny? honest answer
Short answer: not really.
It can handle a large portion of daily cleaning tasks, especially dust and light dirt. But for deep cleaning, corners, and the occasional detail work, labor is still needed.
What it really helps is reducing dependencies. You don’t need daily help, just less frequent cleaning support to manage.
It’s more of a support system than a replacement.
Who should buy the Dreame D20 Ultra robot vacuum?
This makes sense if you have a busy schedule, live in a small to medium-sized home, or just want to cut back on your daily cleaning routine.
It’s especially useful for those who want consistent cleaning without investing daily time.
However, if you’re expecting it to completely take over all cleaning tasks, you might be disappointed. It’s best used as a maintenance tool rather than a complete replacement.
A few days with the Dreame D20 Ultra doesn’t completely change the way you clean your home, but it does change the daily routine.
It makes daily cleaning more consistent, less dependent and easier to manage. At the same time, it also makes it clear that some level of manual cleaning will still be necessary.
In a practical sense, it doesn’t completely replace housekeeping, but it makes me less reliant on it. For many homes, this is a meaningful upgrade in itself.
