If you don’t like typing long texts, Google has a fairly simple solution for you – an app that turns raw and messy speech into clean and beautiful text. The company’s new one, called the “Google AI Edge Eloquent App,” uses artificial intelligence (AI) to translate speech into text while capturing and preserving the intended meaning.
The Google AI Edge Eloquent application uses Google’s Gemma-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) model to translate speech to text without the need for a server connection. When you download the app, the models are automatically downloaded to your smartphone. These models bring features such as offline support and privacy-focused transcription capabilities to applications.
What can the Google AI Edge Eloquent application do?
In addition to translating speech to text, Google’s AI Edge Eloquent app can also convert garbled speech into meaningful and clean text. It automatically edits filler words like “umm” and “ugh” as well as mid-sentence corrections so that the output text is clear and accurate.
Once the transcription is complete, users can turn the text into more formal prose. They can also turn it into shorter or longer text. Alternatively, users can ask the app to highlight their key points.
While the AI Edge Eloquent app comes with a built-in dictionary, users can also create editable dictionaries containing words they use frequently. Additionally, users can connect the app to their Google account to import words from their Gmail account.
On the privacy front, the app runs all machine learning models on the user’s smartphone, meaning audio, transcriptions and personal data never leave the device, making it even more secure to use. While some of the advanced features available in the app do use Google Cloud, users can easily turn off this feature using the toggle button on the Recording screen.

As far as availability is concerned, the new app is currently only available on iOS devices, namely the iPhone. Google has confirmed that it is evaluating other platforms, including desktop platforms, to perform tasks such as dictating documents, code and prompts to AI agents. However, there is no word yet on when the app will be launched on Android smartphones.
