Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, is facing a lawsuit in the US state of Missouri after the parents of a girl claimed that features on the social media platform enabled an adult man to contact, groom and sexually assault their daughter when she was 12 years old.The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in Missouri state court against Snap and Gabriel Joel Valentin-Rios, who pleaded guilty to statutory rape and is serving an 18-year sentence in the state.

Litigation content

The girl began using Snapchat without her parents’ knowledge in 2021 when she was 11 years old, according to the complaint. While the platform requires users to be 13 or older, the lawsuit alleges that children knew they could easily bypass the age verification process. The family alleges that Snapchat’s recommendation system later suggested the girl and other teenage girls from nearby schools as potential contacts for Valentin-Rios, an adult with whom they allegedly had no connection. The lawsuit also accuses the platform of failing to warn users about the risks of contacting strangers, the AP reported. After making contact with the girl, Valentin-Rios allegedly began sending explicit images. The child “did not want the photos and initially did not respond, but the design of Snapchat’s products made it impossible for (her) to avoid such explicit content,” the lawsuit states.Court documents further allege that Snapchat’s Snap Maps feature disclosed the girl’s home location to Valentin-Rios without her knowledge. The lawsuit alleges that Valentin-Rios lied about being a 17-year-old local high school student when he was actually 25 years old. He spent some time grooming the girl before convincing her to meet him in person, where she was subsequently raped. Also read: 11-year-old Delhi girl kidnapped, raped and murdered near Mehrauli-Gurgaon border; held 1The family also claims that despite knowing that Valentin-Rios operated multiple accounts on the platform, including one that was allegedly used to contact teenage girls, Snapchat failed to take action. In response to the lawsuit, Snap said: “We care deeply about the safety and well-being of all Snapchatters, and our teams have worked for years to build safeguards, roll out safety tutorials, work with experts and work with law enforcement to help prevent abuse of our platform.”The girl has since been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression, the lawsuit states. The plaintiffs are seeking damages and a court order to change practices they claim put children in harm’s way.Matthew Bergman, founder of the Social Media Victims Legal Center, which represents the family, believes the platform’s design played a central role in the case.“This attack did not occur in a vacuum, but rather because the design of Snapchat’s product made it easy for predators to access and manipulate unsuspecting children,” Bergman said.He added: “Snap executives have long known that their features created the perfect environment for predators to exploit children, yet they have repeatedly failed to ensure the safety of the platform.”The Missouri case comes as Snap faces broader legal challenges over child safety concerns.

This is not an isolated case

In 2024, New Mexico sued the company, alleging that Snapchat’s design facilitated sextortion, sexual abuse and unwanted contact between adults and minors. According to the lawsuit, the company knew sextortion on Snapchat was a “massive” and “incredibly concerning problem” but failed to adequately warn parents, users and the public. The judge rejected Snap’s attempt to dismiss the case.Separate lawsuits are also pending against the company, including a case in Vermont involving two 12-year-old girls who were allegedly sexually assaulted after meeting an adult via Snapchat.

Multi-Agency River Rescue Response

The plane eventually flipped over in the river and was carried downstream before Pasco fire crews used a boat to secure it and prevent its movement, the Tri-City Herald reported.

Multiple agencies were involved in the flood response, including the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Columbia Basin Dive Rescue Team and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Onshore, Pasco police secured the area and processed on-site documentation, while the Washington State Patrol assisted with coordination. Pasco police released a statement following the incident. “We are dealing with a series of incidents near the river. Please avoid the area, conserve water where possible and treat any non-operational signal as a four-way stop,” they said.

About two hours after the accident, a Lampson crane was used to recover the plane from the water, which appeared to be largely intact. About 20 police and fire brigade personnel were at the scene to deal with the incident.

The Pasco administration noted in an earlier post, “Update 6:20 p.m.: The water conservation requirement has been lifted. Thank you for your understanding and patience while crews restore power to the pump station and Butterfield Water Treatment Plant. Pasco: Please conserve water. Due to an emergency near the cable bridge and power outage, we ask residents to avoid the area and conserve water. We will update when possible.”

Damaged wiring causes fire

Authorities also reported that a damaged power line started a fire in a vacant lot near Riverview Park and caused widespread outages to homes, businesses and traffic signals in parts of Pasco, NBA Tri-Cities reported.

Pasco plane crash: Horrifying photos and videos emerge

Kennewick police and fire personnel managed downed power lines on Clover Island with additional support from agencies across the river.

The flight did not appear to have originated from Richland or Pasco airports, officials added.

A video from a local news channel showed thick smoke billowing from the distance after the crash.

Aircraft ownership under review

Franklin County Coroner Curtis McGarry confirmed that two bodies were recovered from the wreckage and said autopsies were underway.

Earthquake: Watch: Strong earthquakes hit Venezuela, Japan and California within hours

Three strong earthquakes struck around the world within hours on Thursday, including two in Venezuela, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake in northeastern Japan and a 5.6-magnitude quake in northern California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). While the series of earthquakes has raised questions about whether they are related, experts say they are not.Venezuela was reportedly the worst affected, with the US Geological Survey recording earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 and 7.2 within seconds. The strong tremors triggered widespread panic across the country, knocking down several buildings and cracking roads in the capital Caracas, forcing residents onto the streets as emergency teams rushed to the affected areas. The mayor of the Chacao district of Caracas confirmed that people were killed in the earthquake, but the specific death toll has not yet been announced. Rescue operations are continuing and authorities have warned that the number of casualties may rise as the search progresses.Venezuela’s president said about 20 aftershocks had been recorded after the two earthquakes. The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also issued a tsunami threat for parts of the Caribbean, while officials continued to monitor sea level changes and advised coastal residents to remain vigilant.According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan. Authorities said no tsunami warning was issued, no injuries were immediately reported and no abnormalities were detected at the nuclear facility. The Japanese government established an emergency team to collect information from the stricken Tohoku region and prepare for relief operations. The epicenter was located about 50 kilometers offshore from Iwate Prefecture. The strongest earthquake occurred in Aomori Prefecture, with the intensity reaching Japan’s 7th magnitude earthquake and above 6, making it difficult for people to stand.Tohoku Electric Power said no abnormalities were detected at its Onagawa nuclear power plant and the idled Totsugi nuclear power plant, while the nuclear regulator reported no problems at nearby nuclear facilities. East Japan Railway Co. temporarily suspended some services on the Tohoku Shinkansen and other trains and closed some highways for inspections. In the United States, the U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in northern California. The earthquake occurred about 11 kilometers north of Sequoia Valley with a focal depth of 8.1 kilometers. There were no immediate reports of damage, and California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said it was coordinating with emergency officials and assessing potential impacts.Three powerful earthquakes on the same day have raised questions about whether one could trigger another.Caltech seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones told CNN that the earthquakes occurred on different fault systems and plate boundaries, meaning one of them did not trigger the others. Large earthquakes thousands of miles apart generally don’t increase the likelihood of another large earthquake happening elsewhere, she said. While the timing may seem unusual, the location does not, according to CNN. Each earthquake occurs along what are known as active plate boundaries, where stresses have accumulated over decades or even centuries. In these areas, large earthquakes are an expected part of the Earth’s natural cycles, although it remains impossible to predict exactly when they will occur.Japan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, accounting for about one-fifth of all earthquakes measuring magnitude 6 or above. In 2011, the country suffered a magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami, triggering the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

'Crazy': Donald Trump spars with fellow Republicans over Iran
Donald Trump loses temper with fellow Republicans over Iran (file photo)

US President Donald Trump and Republican Senator Bill Cassidy got into a heated argument in a closed-door meeting with Senate Republicans on Thursday (local time), exposing growing divisions within the Republican Party over Trump’s handling of Iran and his broader political agenda. Trump is demanding explanations from Republicans, a day after Republicans and Democrats voted together to limit his military authority in Iran and the conflict erupted. Cassidy, one of four Republican senators to support the measure, challenged the president, saying the administration failed to adequately explain its goals and strategy.CNN quoted Cassidy later recalling the incident as saying: “I stood up and said, ‘You’re not telling the American people what’s going on.'” He added that he questioned why the military operation was extended from an expected four weeks to four months and failed to achieve its original goals.Trump responded angrily, raising his voice at Cassidy, according to multiple people in the room. The Louisiana senator said he responded with the same “tone and volume” as the president. At one point, Trump ordered Cassidy to sit down, but the senator refused. Trump then reportedly called him a “crazy guy.” Cassidy continued to argue and eventually sat down after colleagues urged him to deescalate the situation. A White House official later accused the senator of “completely embarrassing himself” during the exchange. The tense clash came a day after Trump blasted four Republicans who backed the Iran war powers resolution on social media, calling them “Republican losers.” Senator John F. Kennedy said afterward that Trump was “as crazy as a murder hornet” about the vote. The conflict underscores growing dissatisfaction among some Republicans as Trump continues to pressure Congress on issues including Iran policy and election legislation. Several Republican lawmakers have privately expressed concerns about the president’s political strategy and declining support ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Planning to upgrade your refrigerator? These quality refrigerators are worth a look

0

Refrigerators are one of the few appliances that run all day long. This makes storage design, cooling performance and power consumption important factors when choosing a new model. Brands such as Samsung, LG, Haier, Bosch and Midea currently offer refrigerators in different capacity segments. Here’s a closer look at some of the available models.

Planning to upgrade your refrigerator? Below are premium models that offer flexible storage, cooling and energy-saving features. (Haitai Technology)
Planning to upgrade your refrigerator? Below are premium models that offer flexible storage, cooling and energy-saving features. (Haitai Technology)

Samsung’s 301L refrigerator is designed for families who need flexible storage. Its five-in-one conversion feature allows users to switch freezer space to refrigerator space when needed. Temperature control via external display without opening the door. The refrigerator features a digital inverter compressor that adjusts cooling based on usage patterns, helping to manage energy consumption while maintaining consistent cooling. It’s suitable for mid-sized homes looking for adaptable storage.

For larger families, Midea’s 563-liter side-by-side refrigerator offers ample storage capacity. The frost-free system eliminates the need for manual defrost, while multi-directional cooling helps distribute cool air across compartments. The layout supports organized storage of groceries, beverages, dairy and meal prep containers. Its side-by-side design also makes accessing stored items more convenient.

The LG 322-liter refrigerator has a convertible design and comes with the company’s Multi-Airflow system that circulates cool air through multiple vents. The Quick Freeze feature speeds up cooling and ice making when needed. It operates on a smart inverter compressor and does not require an external stabilizer under supported voltage conditions. LG also provides a deodorizer and smart diagnostic support for troubleshooting.

Haier’s 355-liter refrigerator adopts a bottom layout of the freezer compartment, placing the refrigerator part at a more accessible height. This model includes an external digital control panel and a convertible storage area that can be adapted to changing needs. A triple inverter system and dual fan units work together to regulate cooling in each compartment. This design may appeal to users who regularly handle fresh food rather than frozen food.

Samsung’s 419-liter Bespoke AI refrigerator combines storage flexibility with connected functionality. Users can monitor energy consumption and manage settings via a Wi-Fi connection. The refrigerator comes with Samsung’s 5-in-1 conversion system, which allows for different storage configurations based on family needs. It also uses digital inverter technology for cooling management and quieter operation. The larger capacity makes it suitable for families who need extra storage space.

Bosch offers a 335-liter three-door refrigerator focused on food organization. A dedicated lower compartment is designed for fruits and vegetables to help separate them from other food items. The three-door format also reduces the loss of cool air when opening various sections. Bosch says the refrigerator delivers even cooling throughout the cabinet while balancing performance and energy use, making it a practical choice for everyday household needs.

5 things to consider before buying a refrigerator

1. Choose the right capacity

Start by assessing your home size and storage needs. Refrigerators of 250-350 liters are generally suitable for small to medium-sized households, while larger households may benefit from models above 400 liters.

2. Choose the right door configuration

Double-door, three-door, side-by-side and bottom-mounted refrigerators can meet different needs. Before making a decision, consider your kitchen space, storage habits, and how often you get fresh and frozen food.

3. Find convertible storage options

Many newer refrigerators offer convertible modes that allow users to switch freezer space to refrigerator space. This feature is useful during festivals, parties, or times when extra storage of fresh food is required.

4. Check energy efficiency and compressor type

Models equipped with an inverter compressor can adjust the cooling capacity according to usage, helping to reduce power consumption. Additionally, energy ratings can be compared to understand long-term operating costs.

5. Evaluate cooling and convenience features

Features such as multi-airflow cooling, frost-free operation, Wi-Fi connectivity, external control panel, deodorizer and stabilizer-free operation improve daily usability. Prioritize the features you’re most likely to use rather than paying extra for features you may never need.

Who is James Shuford Price III?

James Shuford Price III owns and operates Gold Star Laboratories (GSL), a Los AngelesCalifornia.

Between August 2023 and June 2025, his lab submitted more than $85 million in false claims to Medi-Cal and more than $11 million in false claims to Medicare for COVID-19, influenza and RSV multi-panel tests.

These false claims based on fraudulent test samples resulted in Medi-Cal and Medicare paying GSL more than $60 million, the Ministry of Justice said.

what james shufford price iii did

As part of the program, GSL uses people called “collectors” in California and elsewhere to collect test samples from Medi-Cal and Medicare beneficiaries.

Under Price’s direction, GSL illegally paid these collectors based on the number of samples they provided, prosecutors said. The lab paid more than $17 million to collectors between August 2023 and January 2025. In return, the Collector provided GSL with a large number of fraudulently obtained fake test samples, which included identifying information theft.

Within the first 6 months of the program, approximately 96% of GSL’s Medi-Cal claims related to fraudulent test authorizations from an out-of-state physician whose identity was stolen and misused. In February 2024, Price said he suspended GSL’s test operations for a month to “clean up” the billing issues. However, prosecutors said the lab resumed the same fraudulent behavior after it restarted in March 2024. From late March 2024 to January 2025, approximately 92% of GSL’s Medi-Cal claims were based on false test authorizations created using information stolen from five different clinicians.

Price also directed GSL to sign written contracts with collectors that falsely promised fixed payments and prohibited volume-based payments to make the lab appear to be complying with the law, the DOJ said. However, prosecutors said the kickback scheme continued behind the scenes, resulting in millions of dollars in payments. During the course of the investigation, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office seized more than $6 million in assets related to the fraud.

Price also admitted to filing a false federal income tax return for 2022 because he failed to report income from multiple sources, including money received from victims related to an earlier investment scam, according to the Justice Department.

The U.S. Department of Justice said Price faces a statutory maximum of 13 years in prison, a $500,000 fine and three years of supervised release. He also has to pay restitution to Medi-Cal, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Internal Revenue Service and other agencies.

“Stealing taxpayer funds that should be used to help legitimate beneficiaries is a despicable, dirty act,” said U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle. “We have a message for fraudsters who steal federal funds: We will catch, prosecute and imprison you. The crooks. Never win.”

“This guilty plea demonstrates the FBI’s unwavering commitment to protecting federal health care programs and the taxpayers who fund them,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Reid Davis. “The orchestration of a $60 million Medicare fraud scheme was a serious violation of the public trust.”

"She knows she's lying": Candace Owens faces backlash after linking Erica Kirk's behavior to mental health claims
Candace Owens is sparking controversy online by suggesting that changes in Erika Kirk’s behavior and signature indicate she has mental health issues. In a viral discussion, Owens questioned Kirk’s past statements and personality changes, sparking widespread criticism on social media. Many users felt it was inappropriate to speculate on someone’s mental health without evidence, while others defended Owens’ comments. Neither Erica nor Charlie Kirk publicly responded to the remarks at the time.

Candace Owens is once again at the center of online controversy after she made comments about Erika Kirk during a recent discussion. Her comments about Kirk’s changes in behavior and signature were widely shared on social media and sparked heated debate. Owens’ supporters have defended her right to express her views, while critics say it is inappropriate to publicly speculate on another person’s mental health without medical evidence.

Candace Owens’ comments about Erika Kirk spark online debate

The controversy began when Owens offered her own interpretation of what she thought she saw in Erica Kirk’s signature and behavioral changes. Owens said in his speech: “People don’t change their signatures. You learn cursive, you practice your signature, and then you do it your whole life without thinking. You wouldn’t change your signature any more than you would change your fingerprints, okay? Every descriptive characteristic of someone with dissociative personality disorder matched my experience watching Erica. It’s like having amnesia. “She added, “I don’t think she knows she’s lying. It’s like she doesn’t remember what she said months ago, okay? That’s not lying. It’s a complete dissociation. The memory may not transfer from one identity to another. It’s like she’s under some kind of possession and she’s been lying to us, but she seems frustrated with us because we know she’s lying, and she’s angry. It’s a disorder, guys, when she meets Charlie.” She became a completely different person and even changed her signature completely. eccentric. “The video quickly went viral, sparking mixed reactions from users. Some echoed Owens’ concerns, while others criticized the comments, saying it was inappropriate to publicly speculate on a person’s mental health based on observation rather than professional assessment.Psychiatrists often tell you not to diagnose someone based on the way they look or act in interviews and on social media. For correct diagnosis, a thorough clinical evaluation by a qualified professional is necessary.

Candace Owens Controversy continue to spark discussion

The viral exchange has become another flashpoint in the ongoing public feud surrounding Charlie Kirk and Erica Kirk. Controversy over Owens’ comments, and the larger issue of talking about mental health in public discourse, spread across multiple platforms.Critics argue that the tendency to classify political or personal conflicts as mental problems may contribute to misunderstandings about actual mental health issues. Others believe public figures are subject to scrutiny, although many still distinguish between criticism and medical speculation.Erika Kirk has yet to publicly respond to Owens’ specific remarks because of the amount of attention the discussion has garnered. With reactions still pouring in, the incident highlights how quickly controversial comments can dominate online conversations. It also adds to growing discussions around the responsibility of talking about mental health, especially when comments mention identifiable individuals and are viewed by millions on social media.
