Venezuela earthquake kills 235: Thousands feared trapped under rubble as rescue efforts intensify
Two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck less than a minute apart on Wednesday night

Two powerful earthquakes struck northern Venezuela on Thursday (local time), devasting much of the country and with the death toll rising to at least 235. Thousands more are expected to be affected as rescue workers and volunteers continue to desperately search for survivors in the country’s north. Two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, struck within a minute of each other on Wednesday night, causing widespread damage around Caracas and along the coast, especially La Guaira.According to Reuters, at least 1,500 people were injured, about 200 people are still trapped under collapsed buildings, and about 250 buildings were damaged or destroyed.A website that tracks missing persons lists more than 46,000 people as missing, but this number cannot be independently verified.Acting President Delcy Rodriguez described La Guaira as a “disaster zone” and said authorities were bringing in heavy machinery from private companies to speed up rescue operations. She called on businesses to provide construction equipment and said officials wanted to “save as many survivors as possible.”

Survivors still trapped, rescue operations stepped up

However, residents complained that official rescue efforts were slow, with many relying on neighbors to dig through the rubble with their bare hands.“I want to know where my child is, if he is trapped or in a shelter,” Dayana Delgado, a mother of three, told The Associated Press as she searches for her missing eight-year-old son.The disaster disrupted essential services, with power outages reported in several areas, the main airport in La Guaira, Caracas, closed, metro services suspended and schools converted into shelters. The U.S. Geological Survey said the shallow depth and succession of the quakes greatly increased the damage.USGS forecast models suggest the final death toll could rise into the thousands.

Global aid and disaster relief efforts gather pace

Governments and humanitarian organizations around the world have begun mobilizing rescue teams, funds and emergency supplies. The United States has authorized $150 million in humanitarian assistance, including funding for United Nations agencies and aid organizations, while deploying disaster response teams and urban search and rescue forces. The U.S. military also announced it would send two warships, transport planes and helicopters to support rescue operations, while the Treasury Department temporarily eased sanctions until October 23 to facilitate earthquake-related aid.The United Nations is coordinating international search and rescue teams, and aid chief Tom Fletcher said a “massive collective effort” was needed.According to Reuters, Starlink announced that it will provide free satellite Internet services in affected areas for a month and deploy more terminals to restore communications.Several countries, including Mexico, Colombia, Spain, France, Italy, Ecuador, Panama and El Salvador, have sent or pledged to send rescue teams, medical personnel, search and rescue dogs, aircraft and emergency equipment.Prime Minister Modi also expressed his condolences over the tragedy and offered his support. “Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the severe earthquake in Venezuela. On behalf of the people of India, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Venezuela, especially the families who have lost their loved ones. We pray for a speedy recovery for the injured and stand with all those affected during this difficult time. India stands ready to provide all possible assistance,” he wrote on X.Pope Leo XIV has also donated 100,000 euros to relief efforts, while World Central Kitchen has begun distributing meals in Caracas and has pledged an additional $1 million in aid.Despite the large number of casualties, Venezuela’s critical oil infrastructure appears to have suffered no major damage, allowing energy operations to continue largely undisturbed.

‘Give me some shit’: Streamer ‘Collarbone’ goes viral for cruel review of French restaurant’s organic burgers

0

"give me some shit": Kickstarter
Kick host Collarbone went viral after he criticized an organic burger served at a high-end French restaurant, calling it “almost inedible” and saying McDonald’s tasted much better. During the live broadcast, he complained about the burger falling apart and questioned the restaurant’s upscale service, despite his poor dining experience. The video quickly spread on social media, sparking debate over whether expensive restaurants always serve better food than fast food chains.

A Kick streamer named Clavical caused a flurry of reactions online after he threw out a burger at an upscale French restaurant, claiming the high-end meal was not worthy of its price or status. His candid comments quickly went viral on social media, with clips of his comments racking up millions of views and reigniting the debate about whether good food always trumps fast food.

Collarbone’s French restaurant review goes viral

In the viral video, Collarbone can be seen enjoying a seemingly organic burger during a livestream from a fancy restaurant. Rather than praising the meal, he was quick to criticize its taste and presentation, making several unfavorable comparisons to McDonald’s.His criticism became more pointed when the bun started to fall apart and he had trouble eating the burger. Throughout the broadcast, he kept wondering how a restaurant with such an upscale atmosphere could serve food that in his opinion fell short of even the most basic expectations.Once, Collarbone said:AdvertisementHis comments echoed the frustration felt by many viewers at paying high prices for meals that didn’t live up to expectations. Others, however, believe that a single dish should not define the quality of an entire restaurant.

Collarbone says McDonald’s burgers taste better

In addition to criticizing the restaurant, another comment by Collarbone quickly attracted the attention of the audience. A viral post recapping the livestream said he claimed McDonald’s burgers tasted “much better” than the organic burgers he got. This comparison is one of the hottest topics online. Some users suggested that high-end restaurants may focus more on appearance than flavor, while others defended the cuisine and said personal taste is an important factor in food reviews. She also pointed out that live broadcasters have an increasing influence on public opinion. Even a short clip of less than a minute was enough to spark some serious discussion across multiple platforms, with many viewers engaging despite never having been to the restaurant in person. So far, the restaurant has not publicly responded to the viral criticism. It’s unclear whether Clavical’s comments are a bad experience that happens to everyone from time to time or a difference in taste. But the video illustrates yet again how unscripted moments on-air can dominate social media. In an age where creators tell everyday stories from their lives, a simple and honest reaction to a meal can spark a viral conversation that reaches millions of people around the world.

Buying a new TV? Most Indians Choose Wrong Size: Here’s How to Choose Your Size Right

0

Many TV buyers make the same mistake: They start with the largest screen their budget allows. In fact, screen size alone does not determine viewing quality. A TV that is too big for the room can be just as uncomfortable as a TV that is too small. A better approach is to match the display size to the distance between the screen and the seating area.

How to choose the right TV size for your room can save money and improve viewing comfort. (no splash)
How to choose the right TV size for your room can save money and improve viewing comfort. (no splash)

For homes where the viewer sits about 6 to 8 feet from the TV, a 43-inch or 50-inch model is usually sufficient. If the seating distance is between 8 and 10 feet, a 55-inch screen can generally provide a balanced experience. Larger options, such as 65-inch or 75-inch TVs, make more sense in larger rooms where viewers are seated farther away. Choosing a larger monitor for a compact space often adds cost without adding much value.

Please measure your room carefully before purchasing. Check the dimensions of the wall or TV unit and note the viewing distance. Additionally, factors such as resolution, refresh rate, operating system, audio output, and app support can be compared. These features impact everyday use beyond just screen size.

Here are five TVs to suit different room sizes and budgets.

This TV is suitable for bedrooms, dens and compact living spaces. QLED panels help provide better color reproduction compared to standard LED panels, while the Google TV platform provides access to popular streaming services and apps. The TV also features 26W speakers with Dolby Audio support for casual viewing without the need for external speakers.

Buyers looking for an affordable smart TV can consider this model. The bezel-less design helps maximize screen real estate, while the Linux-based operating system provides access to streaming platforms like YouTube and Prime Video. The 20W speaker setup with Dolby Audio support delivers clear sound for daily entertainment.

For mid-sized living rooms, this 55-inch model strikes a practical balance between screen size and viewing comfort. The 4K panel supports HDR10, while MEMC technology helps reduce motion blur in sports and fast-moving scenes. Google TV integration, voice control, and built-in storage bring convenience to users who rely heavily on streaming services.

Samsung’s 32-inch offering is designed for smaller spaces where compact monitors work best. The TV runs on the Tizen platform and provides access to apps, streaming services and free channels. Features like PurColor technology, voice control, and built-in security tools make it a suitable choice for users looking for a trustworthy smart TV ecosystem.

This model is aimed at buyers with larger rooms and longer viewing distances. The 75-inch QLED panel supports 4K resolution, Dolby Vision and 120Hz refresh rate, making it suitable for sports, movies and games. The 80W speaker system with Dolby Atmos support reduces the need for an external sound system in many setups.

5 things to consider before buying a TV

1. Viewing distance and screen size

Choose your TV size based on how close you sit to the screen. Bigger TV isn’t always better. Matching the screen size to your room can improve comfort and help avoid unnecessary spending.

2. Display resolution

Check if the TV offers HD Ready, Full HD or 4K resolution. For larger screens, 4K resolution generally offers better detail, especially when watching high-quality content.

3. Smart TV platform

Check out the operating system, such as Google TV, Tizen or Linux. A good smart platform should provide access to popular streaming apps, regular updates, and an easy-to-use interface.

4. Audio performance

Built-in speakers vary by model. If you like watching movies, sports, or shows without adding a separate sound system, compare speaker output to features like Dolby Audio or Dolby Atmos.

5. Connectivity and functionality

Check the number of HDMI and USB ports, Wi-Fi support, voice control options, refresh rate, and cast capabilities. These factors can affect how easy it is to connect game consoles, streaming devices, and other accessories.

Does H-1B require a visa stamp? Reddit user shares Texas driver’s license update fix: “Require DPS for SAVE verification”

0

One Reddit user shared what they described as a successful workaround for renewing a Texas driver’s license while changing immigration status from F-1 STEM OPT to H-1B without first obtaining a license. H-1B visa stamp.

Reddit users claim that even though the H-1B status change has been approved, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) system continues to show their old F-1 STEM OPT status. (x/@damienmickey)
Reddit users claim that even though the H-1B status change has been approved, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) system continues to show their old F-1 STEM OPT status. (x/@damienmickey)

exist postalthe user claimed that the issue occurred because despite the H-1B Change of Status (COS) being approved, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) system continued to reflect their previous F-1 STEM OPT status, preventing them from extending their driver’s license.

Hindustan Times was unable to independently verify the claims in the Reddit post.

Why driver’s license renewal is delayed

According to Reddit users, they changed their status from F-1 STEM OPT to H-1B through status change last year, but have not yet traveled outside the United States to get their H-1B visa stamped.

Since STEM OPT was expiring in August, they went to the Texas DPS office to renew their driver’s license using the updated Form I-94. However, they said the application could not be processed because the DPS system still showed their old immigration status.

“DPS can’t extend it because their system still shows my old F-1/STEM OPT validity and only allows the expiration date until August.”

The Reddit user added that before visiting the DPS office, they had seen similar experiences shared by other users online.

“Require DPS to perform SAVE verification”

The user then outlined the steps they said they took to ultimately resolve the issue.

According to the post, applicants should bring immigration documents to their DPS appointment, including their passport, Form I-797 approval notice and their most recent Form I-94. Although DPS processed the application, photos and fingerprints, the official informed users that the H-1B status was not yet showing in the system, according to the report.

Reddit users said they are asking DPS to initiate SAVE (Systematic Alien Entitlement Verification) verification, the federal system used by government agencies to verify immigration status.

About two to three weeks later, the user said they received a notification confirming that verification was complete. “After receiving the notice, go directly to DPS (I don’t need to make another appointment). Show them the notice and they will resume the pending application.”

According to Reddit users, the officer then completed the pending application and approved the driver’s license extension.

Other users have provided additional tips

The post prompted questions and suggestions from peers Reddit user. One commenter asked whether H-1B status is already in effect when renewal is attempted, while another suggested ensuring that the applicant’s SEVIS record is updated by the school to avoid conflicts in immigration records.

When asked which DPS office they had visited, the original poster said it was a regular city location, adding that the first visit was not a success. However, during a later visit, another official suggested initiating a SAVE verification request.

“I think we need to ask them that, otherwise they’ll ask you to come back when the current one expires.”

The case is at the center of the conflict

Alito began by briefly summarizing his majority opinion in Mullin v. Al Otro Lado, which held that the government has the authority to return immigrants stopped at the U.S. border before giving them a chance to apply for asylum, the New York Post reported.

The court ruled 6-3 on ideological grounds. trump card The government turns over those seeking asylum in the United States before they reach U.S. soil.

In Mullin v. Al Otro Lado, the court ruled that the “metering” practice, which limits the number of people who can apply for asylum each day, is legal under federal law, which allows immigrants to seek protection on U.S. soil regardless of whether they entered the country legally.

Alito wrote three of the four majority opinions issued by the Supreme Court on Thursday and summarized each one. In a separate case, Alito ruled that the Trump administration could end Temporary Protected Status for immigrants from Haiti and Syria, meaning they could lose protection from deportation.

It is not routine practice for the justices to read dissenting opinions from the justices, but they are occasionally done to express strong dissent from a majority ruling.
