The 12,000-year-old mystery of Göbekli Tepe in Türkiye: Who built this temple, and where did its builder disappear?

Long before there were any cities, any agriculture, or any pottery, people gathered on a hill in what is now southern Turkey and created something incredible. The huge stone pillars are decorated with animals and symbols, arranged in a huge circle. This is believed to be the oldest known temple in the world. Dating back nearly 12,000 years, it has archaeologists rethinking the origins of civilization. As quickly as it came, it was deliberately buried, and the people who built it seemed to disappear. However, new discoveries are constantly revealing new aspects of the mystery.

Gobekli Tepe:Temple built by hunter-gatherers in Türkiye around 9600 BC

German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt, who discovered it in the 1990s and has studied it extensively, told the BBC it is ancient, appearing around 9600 BC, predating Stonehenge or the pyramids. There are large circular buildings, huge T-shaped limestone columns rising into the air, some weighing several tons, decorated with images of animals, foxes, lions, birds, looking down at you. Even stranger is the fact that these were built by hunter-gatherers who had not yet domesticated plants or developed cities. In fact, they apparently survived by foraging in the wild but somehow managed to build this. What does Schmidt think? “This was a supernova, a moment that completely changed our view of early human history.”

Discoveries that rewrote human history

It has long been thought that agriculture came first, then settlement, then the building of monuments and temples. Göbekli Tepe turns the whole process on its head. There is evidence that this place existed long before farmers, possibly because shared beliefs and rituals brought people together. Some believe that the process of constructing such large structures may have been the very beginning of agriculture. As Schmidt said, Göbekli Tepe may have been a turning point in history, where religion and work together sparked the beginning of civilization. There is widespread speculation in academic circles that it may “be the spark that leads humans to agriculture.”What’s even more interesting is that there are no signs of a house or living space at this location. In an interview, Schmidt asked the question that’s still on everyone’s mind: “We didn’t find a home… where is everyone?”This suggests that people may have come from distant areas to gather for rituals or ceremonies and then dispersed again.

Why was Göbekli Tepe deliberately buried?

One of the most puzzling aspects of Göbekli Tepe is not how it was created, but why it was deliberately buried. Around 8000 BC, the entire site was deliberately buried under tons of earth and debris. This was not done because of any natural disaster. As a summary of the Göbekli Tepe study notes, the layer hiding the site was “placed here by humans themselves.”

Why would a civilization bury something so monumental?

There is no single answer, but several theories exist:

  • The site may have lost its religious significance
  • Cultural or social shifts may render it obsolete
  • New belief systems can replace old belief systems
  • it may be intentionally withheld or hidden

Schmidt himself acknowledged the uncertainty, saying the cause was unclear, although the act clearly marked “the end of a very strange culture.”

The disappearance of the builder

The big question that lingers in people’s minds is what happened to the people who built Göbekli Tepe. There are no signs of sudden disasters or wars and exodus. We do see a gradual decline, which is associated with larger changes in people’s lifestyles. Concurrently with the construction of Göbekli Tepe, there were the first signs of agriculture and settled communities. This shows that the people who built Göbekli Tepe did not disappear but evolved. They moved from ceremonial gatherings to settled communities and agriculture. Göbekli Tepe is therefore the last chapter of the hunter-gatherer way of life and the first page of a new chapter for humanity.

Why Göbekli Tepe is still important today

Göbekli Tepe is not only an ancient site; It is a gateway to a time in human history when the world was on the verge of a revolution. It challenges all old theories about the origins of civilization, showing that faith, cooperation and shared goals may be as important as the need for survival.Today, much of the site remains buried underground, with only a small portion excavated so far. This means there is still much to discover in the future.Ultimately, Göbekli Tepe tells us that the story of civilization’s development is far more complex and interesting than we previously thought.

France rules out possibility of escorting Hormuz ship due to ‘explosion’

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that France would “never” help secure the Strait of Hormuz “in the context of the current hostilities” and rejected calls for help from U.S. President Donald Trump.

France rules out possibility of escorting Hormuz ship due to ‘explosion’

Speaking at a defense council meeting, Macron said France could help escort ships in the strategic waterway, but only if the situation calmed down. About 20% of the world’s seaborne oil passes through this waterway.

Macron said last week that France and its allies were preparing a “defensive” mission to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The strait has been effectively closed by Iran in response to the war launched by the United States and Israel on February 28.

The French president stressed at the time that such action would be possible “after the most intense phase of the conflict is over.”

“We are not a party to the conflict, so France will never take part in an operation to open or liberate the Strait of Hormuz under the current circumstances,” Macron said on Tuesday.

Macron added: “As soon as the situation calms down, that is, as soon as the core of the explosion stops, we are ready to assume responsibility for the escort system together with other countries.”

“But this requires extensive political and technical work, involving all players in maritime, insurance and operations teams, and we need to build together.”

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday slammed NATO as “stupid” over Iran, saying the United States didn’t need help.

Trump said most U.S. allies had rejected his offer to escort ships through the vital waterway.

“I think NATO is making a very stupid mistake,” Trump told reporters.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said London was working with allies on a “workable” plan to reopen the Channel but ruled out a NATO mission, while German officials said it had “always been clear this war was not about NATO.”

Japan, Australia, Poland, Spain, Greece and Sweden have also distanced themselves from military involvement in the Strait of Hormuz.

Global oil prices have soared 40% to 50% since Iran began attacking shipping in key waterways and launching waves of missile and drone attacks across the Gulf.

'Tied up and thrown in jail': Sonam Wangchuk's first words after release from NSA custody

Golden Wangchuck

Srinagar: Environmentalist and member of Leh Apex Body (LAB) Golden Wangchuck On Tuesday, he likened his arrest to a “non-fiction thriller” that could be made into a movie, but declared that he was ready to move beyond his prison experience and have meaningful conversations, as reflected by the Center’s recent revocation of his detention under the National Security Act (NSA).Wangchuck called for “constructive dialogue” three days after his release from Jodhpur jail in September last year after he was arrested from Leh over violence during protests for Ladakh’s statehood and Sixth Schedule status. He said this would ensure a “win-win” situation not only for himself but also for Ladakh and the government.

‘Tied up and thrown in jail’: Sonam Wangchuk’s first words after release from NSA custody

Wangchuck, speaking to reporters in Delhi alongside his lawyer Vivek Tankha, said the NSA’s removal and the Center’s mention of meaningful dialogue reflected what he and others had been fighting for during the long-running protests. He recalled that he had earlier walked from Leh to Delhi, went on a long hunger strike and was even jailed for dialogue.

Do you support the call for a meaningful dialogue on Ladakh’s statehood and Sixth Schedule status?

Wangchuck hopes the Supreme Court – where his NSA detention is being challenged – will record a verdict despite being overturned, in order to guide future administrative actions, especially in the use of such a strict law.He stressed that public sentiment in Ladakh was in favor of dialogue. “Even in yesterday’s (Monday’s) rally (for statehood and Sixth Schedule), the demand was to resume negotiations. Where do you find a place like this and people like this? Usually you find people leaving the conversation table and taking up guns. Here there are calls for the government to demand that it come to the discussion table.”Wangchuck expressed hope that he could return to Ladakh soon to hold consultations with leaders of the Labor Party and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and “share positive developments in the coming days.” Wangchuck said: “Negotiation is a process of concessions, and both parties must be thoughtful and flexible.”

Sargasso Sea: Explore the unique coastless North Atlantic waters
Image source: generated by artificial intelligence

Ever imagined sailing endlessly across a seemingly infinite horizon of blue water with no sign of land in sight? There are no soft white sand beaches or rocky cliffs and headlands to mark the edge. This isn’t a sailor’s worst nightmare. This is the Sargasso Sea, the only ocean in the world that has no land borders because it has no coast. Located deep in the heart of the North Atlantic, this mysterious ocean fascinates scientists and the world with its unique features and its importance in the ocean’s life cycle. With its water so deep and so clear, and visibility often exceeding 50 to 60 meters, scientists have long been amazed by its unique features. For centuries, explorers have viewed the ocean as a haven for lost ships and sailors trapped in kelp-choked waters. Today, we know it is an important part of the world’s oceans. As climate change disrupts ocean waters, understanding the Sargasso Sea becomes increasingly urgent. So why is it the most mysterious ocean on Earth?

Sargasso Sea: the only sea without a coast

The Sargasso Sea is unique in that it is the only ocean in the world that has no borders with national territories. Unlike any other ocean in the world, it floats in the ocean and is surrounded by four powerful ocean currents.

  • Bounded to the west by the strong Gulf Stream
  • to the north, to the north Atlantic current
  • In the east, near the Canary Current
  • In the south, influenced by the North Atlantic equatorial current

These currents combine to form a giant clockwise circulation that keeps the water and everything in it in an ever-changing pattern some 2 to 5 million square kilometers wide. The boundaries constantly change with the seasons and weather, and depend on the Azores high pressure center. A scientific report published in 2011 defined its boundaries based on ocean currents, seaweed growth and ocean depth, locating it between 22° and 38° north latitude and 76° and 43° west longitude, with a total area of 4.16 million square kilometers. “While all other oceans in the world are at least partially defined by land boundaries, the Sargasso Sea is defined solely by ocean currents,” states NOAA, emphasizing its absolute uniqueness. The lack of shore creates a silence amidst the churning of the Atlantic Ocean, with visibility deep into the crystal-clear waters. No wonder early navigators such as Christopher Columbus feared it in 1492, mistaking its kelp mats for shoals that could destroy ships.

Why does the Sargasso Sea have no coastline?

What makes this sea shoreless? It all comes down to oceanography. The North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre acts like a natural corral, circulating water clockwise and preventing it from overflowing. The free-floating sargassum seaweed from which the ocean takes its name (from the Portuguese sargaço) thrives here in huge, tangled mats. Unlike other seaweeds around the world, these whole seaweeds reproduce directly at the surface of the ocean and do not need a seafloor to begin life. Picture golden-brown rafts drifting lazily throughout, creating floating habitats that undulate with the current. This seaweed is not just a sight; This is the signature of the sea, giving it its unique hue and calmness. The Sargasso Sea is an area of the Atlantic Ocean surrounded by four currents, forming an ocean circulation. According to historical charts and modern research, it is the only named ocean without land borders.Danish researcher Johannes Schmidt during his 1920-1922 Dana expedition identified this site as a breeding ground for European and American eels, where their larvae hatch before beginning their mass migration. According to NOAA records, the Sargasso Sea has no solid land edge, embodying the sheer freedom and fragility of the ocean.Unique marine life in the shoreless Sargasso SeaLife explodes in this floating world. Sargassum beds are home to shrimp, crabs and more than 100 species of fish that have adapted to navigate the seaweed. The sargassum fish itself cleverly mimics seaweed. Baby loggerhead sea turtles find this a safe haven, hiding away and eating seaweed. Humpback whales and dolphins also migrate through the area to feed on algae-associated organisms. It is also the spawning area for endangered species such as eels, white marlin and porbeagle sharks. Seabirds dive into the water to feed, and tuna also use the sargassum. Metagenomic studies in the 2000s revealed an astonishing diversity of microbes in the region. Sargassum beds contribute to local oxygen production and support rich marine ecosystems. Plastic waste is also accumulating in the North Atlantic Garbage Patch. Plastic waste accumulation, overfishing and oil exploration all pose growing threats to the region. Since 1954, scientists at the Bermuda Institute have monitored a 1°C rise in temperatures since the 1980s.

Sargasso Sea threats and conservation

Human hands have even reached this distant sea. Industrial fishing depletes stocks, while deep-sea mining and shipping increase risks. The United Kingdom, the United States, Monaco and other countries established the Sargasso Marine Commission in 2014 to promote conservation. At the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference, Representative Fae Sapsford shared lessons learned from ten years of cooperation: High-level talks aim to obtain 60 treaty ratifications as soon as possible, the statement was released through the official website of the Government of Bermuda. Recent research has linked Sargassum declines in northern reaches to a warming Gulf of Mexico. Recent studies have shown that regional fluctuations in Sargassum distribution are related to changes in ocean conditions. Researchers urge action to use Argo buoys and satellites to monitor changes. “These findings suggest warming ocean temperatures, changes in nutrient status, and changes in circulation patterns,” scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution warned in a 2025 study published in Nature Geoscience. Protecting this boundless wonder is of global importance. It regulates climate, maintains biodiversity and measures ocean health. As David Freestone, executive director of the Sargasso Sea Commission, points out in the report, collaborative stewardship can turn challenges into opportunities. Sailors’ ancient fears now inspire modern determination: the Sargasso Sea is enduring, a timeless testament to nature’s creativity.

Netanyahu again mocks death rumors in new video with US envoy

israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is once again mocking online rumors of his death, this time appearing in a new video alongside U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, as conspiracy theories about the Israeli leader continue to circulate on social media amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

New video shows Netanyahu joking about deaths

Netanyahu’s latest video, shared on X, shows Huckabee walking through his office with the Israeli prime minister and joking that US President Donald Trump sent him to check on Netanyahu.

Iranian missile attack near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office sparks panic in Jerusalem – report

“Donald Trump wants me to make sure you’re okay,” Huckabee said with a laugh.Netanyahu responded: “Yes, Mike, I am alive.”Huckabee then added that Trump wanted to make sure “because you guys get along so well.”The Israeli prime minister continued the joke, taking aim at another viral claim online that his recent video was generated by artificial intelligence.“We shake hands with five fingers on each hand,” Netanyahu said, mocking social media posts that suggested he appeared to have too many fingers in an earlier video. These remarks directly refer to the so-called “six-finger” conspiracy theory that has been widely circulated online recently.

Netanyahu also mentioned new Israeli attacks

The video is not limited to humor. At one point, Netanyahu pulled out what he said was a card listing senior Iranian leaders targeted by Israel.“Today I erased two names from the punch card,” he said, referring to the overnight killings of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council secretary Ali Larijani and Basij commander Ghulamreza Soleimani.Netanyahu praised Washington’s role in the conflict, saying: “What the president and the U.S. military have done is incredible.”He added that Israel was “extremely proud to stand alongside the United States in operations against Iran” and accused Tehran’s leadership of seeking nuclear weapons and the means to attack “every American city” after “the elimination of Israel.”“They won’t do that,” Netanyahu said. “We’re killing them.”Sharing the video onHe added, “Great to meet Ambassador @GovMikeHuckabee. Always a pleasure.”The purpose of the post appeared to be an effort to bolster his public influence and forge a close strategic alliance with the Trump administration at a time when misinformation about his condition spreads online.

Rumors have been circulating for many days

It is the latest in a series of videos Netanyahu has released refuting false claims about his death. On Monday, the Israeli prime minister shared another video of himself outdoors, chatting leisurely while apparently buying coffee. In that video, Netanyahu quipped: “I’m craving coffee” when told that some channels claimed he was dead. A day earlier, he posted another video showing his palms and mocking rumors about his death and the “six fingers” theory.“What do they say about me?” Netanyahu captioned the previous video.

The prime minister’s office and the Israeli envoy earlier denied the claims

Israel’s prime minister’s office has dismissed the rumors as entirely false.Asked about social media posts claiming Netanyahu was killed in retaliation for recent Israeli and U.S. attacks on Iran, the office told Anadolu News: “These are fake news; the prime minister is fine.”Refuting the viral claims while interacting with reporters in Delhi, Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar said: “Prime Minister Netanyahu is alive. I met him more than once when I was in Israel. The cafe video was not produced by artificial intelligence. A lot of false information is being spread. “According to the Times of India, Azar also accused Iran and its “accomplices” of spreading false information.

“Six-finger” theory fuels artificial intelligence speculation

The “Six Fingers” rumor appears to have gained traction after Netanyahu released a video of a press conference on Friday about the conflict between Israel, the United States and Iran. Some social media users claimed the video was generated by artificial intelligence, noting that the moment Netanyahu raised his hand, it appeared to them to have an extra finger.Users described it as a “classic AI finger glitch,” although the Israeli government flatly rejected this claim. The rumors spread during a period of heightened regional tensions that began on February 28, when Israel and the United States launched coordinated strikes against Iranian targets, prompting a flood of misinformation, doctored images and unsubstantiated claims online.

The tour is still under review by the England and Wales Cricket Board. In addition to results on the field, the tour also drew attention for reports about the team’s culture. During the break in Noosa, there were claims that players were drinking too much. There were also reports that vice-captain Harry Brooke got into an argument with a nightclub bouncer during his pre-series visit to New Zealand.Pope said the team remains focused on winning the Ashes and pointed to the first Test in Perth as a crucial moment.“Going into this series, there was a lot of discussion about preparation,” Pope told reporters. “As a team, people might misunderstand that we don’t make as much of a fuss as people think.”Speaking at Surrey’s media day, the 28-year-old said the result of the opening Test will determine the entire story.“The hardest thing for everyone in the first game (Test) is the nature of it. If we win and we do a little bit better on the second day, then the thinking will be different.“Of course we want to be a team that is well-liked on and off the pitch but unfortunately our performances have not allowed that to happen in Australia.”“I can understand why people feel that way, but at the same time, the feeling that we don’t make a fuss is probably a hard thing to do. All we want to do is go win the Ashes… all anyone wants to do is win,” Pope said.“For us, sometimes it’s just about taking the pressure off of the actual Test match.”Even before the series began, questions were raised about England’s preparations in Australian conditions. Their preparations include a three-day match against the England Lions at Lilac Hill in Perth.“As we’ve done in previous years, we’re trying to treat it like a normal series to get the best out of ourselves,” Pope said. “Unfortunately, things didn’t go exactly as planned.”He added: “I know I need to prepare as best as I can. From a personal point of view, I feel I’m ready for the first Test.”Pope, who was dropped after the third Test, averaged 20.83 in his first three games. Jacob Bethell replaced him and scored a century in the fifth Test in Sydney.Despite the setback, Pope said he is focused on returning to the team.“I still feel like my best hitting years are ahead of me.”His comments came after the ECB reversed a plan to restrict Ashes players from speaking to the media ahead of the start of the county season, while a review by the tour continues.

MTG issues big warning after Joe Kent resigns

In response to the news, former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene said Kent was a “great American hero” but warned the Trump administration “will lie about Joe Kent and try to discredit him.”

“They would lie to Joe Kent and try to discredit him. Don’t believe the lies! Joe Kent was a great American hero with 11 tours of duty and a Gold Star husband! He was right!” she wrote on the X.

Joe Kent’s resignation letter to Trump

Joe Kent, a former U.S. Army Ranger who served in 11 combat tours and whose first spouse was killed in Syria in 2019, said in his resignation letter to U.S. President Donald Trump that Iran “posed no imminent threat” to the United States.

“It is clear that we are waging this war under pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby,” Kent said. “You will not understand until June 2025 that war in the Middle East is a trap that robs American patriots of precious lives and drains our nation of wealth and prosperity.”

Kent pushed the conflict with Iran by blaming “senior Israeli officials” and prominent U.S. media figures for orchestrating a “misinformation campaign” that undermined the America-first agenda and stoked war sentiments.

“This echo chamber is used to deceive you into believing that Iran poses an imminent threat to the United States and that if you attack now, there is a clear path to quick victory,” Kent said. “This is a lie, the same tactic the Israelis used to drag us into the disastrous war in Iraq that cost our country the lives of thousands of its best men and women.”
