Charlie Orchard-Lisle was spending time with his family on East Lane Beach in the Suffolk village of Bawdersey when he noticed an oddly shaped object resting next to an incoming wave. It was striking enough for Charlie and his mother, Eleanor, to stop and take a closer look.Although the artifact has worn away over time, it appears to be distinct from other gemstones. Rather than writing off the item as just another stone, the family chose to keep it because they thought it might be special. It turns out they were right, as experts studied the fossil and discovered that it was actually an elephant tooth that had survived for nearly two million years.The fossil was found to be an upper left molar belonging to an extinct elephant called Anancus avernensis. According to the New York Post, the person who confirmed the discovery was Professor Adrian Lister, a paleontologist at the Natural History Museum in London. The molars are about four inches in size and still retain much of their enamel from being buried in sediment over the years. Over thousands of years, minerals have replaced some of the original material, turning the tooth into a fossil.
