Ahead of America’s 250th Independence Day on July 4, the 16-day event kicked off on Wednesday on the National Mall in Washington.Several artists and performers, including Morris Day and The Time, rapper Young MC, Jodie Rocco of Milli Vanilli, country singer Martina McBride, The Commodores and former Poison frontman Bret Michaels, have denied participating in the festivities.But after her performance, country music singer Alexis faced a wave of criticism and suggestions that she was only performing at the event because she was Patel’s girlfriend. “You can hear better playing at any high school ball game,” one X user wrote, while another chimed in: “They’re not allowing autotune this time?”Another wrote: “The good news is that when I saw the news it was already 11pm and I had already taken my hearing aids out for the night.”“Is it a violation of federal ethics laws to have the girlfriend of the FBI director accept taxpayer pay to perform?” Sara Higdon posted, which Alexis chose to respond to, to put an end to the speculation and vicious smear campaign.“I have been a country music artist for many years. I have had a successful career in both music and criticism/strategy. People are not going to deny that because of clicks or headlines. I was asked to volunteer to sing the anthem, just like I have been to so many other places in my career,” Wilkins wrote of her singing.“I will not accept payment for this great honor. The entire Freedom250 celebration is conducted through fundraising means; neither the UFC nor any National Mall celebration is ‘taxpayer funded,'” the 27-year-old singer wrote of the “taxpayer” portion.“I will no longer accept false narratives and completely false accusations that undermine my hard work and accomplishments, so please expect this reaction to continue,” Wilkins warned.Alexis Wilkins has also been surrounded by controversy since Patel became FBI director. Their relationship came under scrutiny because of their age gap, and Wilkins was accused of being an Israeli spy. The movement of Patel’s plane was also scrutinized to determine whether Patel was traveling for work or personal reasons.
