A passenger on an American Airlines flight to Philadelphia caused a disturbance in the final minutes of the trip when he allegedly bit another passenger and tried to fight with someone on board. The incident occurred on Sunday on a flight from Charlotte, North Carolina. The pilot alerted authorities before landing and asked police and medical teams to meet the plane as a precaution, according to air traffic control audio reviewed by CBS News.

American Airlines crew requests medical and police assistance

The incident occurred as the plane approached Philadelphia International Airport. In air traffic control audio seen by CBS News, the pilot described a passenger who appeared to be acting aggressively toward others on the plane.

“I don’t know…if he was hallucinating or something, but he just bit a passenger and then he wanted to fight everyone. What a great day, haha.”

American Airlines later told CBS News that the passenger was experiencing a medical emergency. The airline said a medical professional who happened to be on board intervened and assisted the passenger before the plane landed safely.

The airline also confirmed that a medical team met the passenger upon arrival. However, American Airlines did not disclose whether police were present when the plane arrived at the gate. Flight tracking website FlightAware showed the flight landed in Philadelphia shortly around 10 a.m. ET.

There have been several incidents of disruption on U.S. flights in recent weeks

The incident in Philadelphia comes amid a series of passenger unrest on commercial flights in recent weeks.
