According to the Los Angeles Times, Carvalho submitted his resignation on Sunday, June 21, and said his resignation would be effective immediately. “It has been an honor to serve you,” the 61-year-old wrote in the note. “Together, we have made historic progress over the past four years — gains that belong to our students, our educators, staff and our communities.”

Carvalho wrote in his resignation letter to the Los Angeles Unified School District that he did not want to be a “distraction” to students. “Putting students first has always been a guiding principle in my work,” he said.

The unanimous ruling came just two days after raids were conducted on his $2.5 million San Pedro home, offices at the Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters in downtown Los Angeles and another location in Miami linked to the investigation. Carvalho and his wife, Maria Florio Borgia Carvalho, were handcuffed and placed in the back seat of a car after armed agents raided the San Pedro home, the Los Angeles Times reported. Agents seized cellphones, computers and paper documents.

Meanwhile, school board members and staff were asked to leave the Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters while agents searched the location.

Carvalho has not been charged with any crime. The Los Angeles Unified School District said it is cooperating with investigators.

“Mr. Carvalho respects the rule of law and the investigative process and always acts within the bounds of the law in the best interests of students,” a spokesperson said, according to the New York Post. “While the government’s investigation remains ongoing, prosecutors have provided no evidence to support allegations that Mr. Carvalho violated federal law.”
