According to a news release from the police, the SUV drove out of the South Side neighborhood after a shooting Friday evening that left two people, both men, seriously injured. One of the victims was shot in the thigh.
The group consisted of eight men and four women, ranging in age from 17 to 47 years old. They were treated at four different hospitals.
Authorities reported that the other man suffered unspecified injuries but refused medical attention.
Initially, police responded to a report of a shooting and found a woman with two gunshot wounds to her back and a man with four abrasions on his back. The pair are reportedly in good condition.
Detectives are currently investigating. No further information was immediately available.
The events occurred on Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Earlier Friday, former President Barack Obama and the former first lady Michelle Obama Greet the first guests at the Presidential Center on the South Side.
The Rev. Donovan Price, a local advocate for victims of gun violence, told CBS News it was a tragedy to witness a mass shooting on such an important holiday. “It should be celebrated,” he said, adding that “fireworks should not turn into gunshots.”
