Wall Street veteran father, orthodontist mother: How Indian-American Aman Sangh’s parents shaped his billion-dollar career
Aman Sanger was born in 2000 and started learning programming at the age of 14

Long before Aman Sangh became one of the youngest billionaires in the artificial intelligence industry, the foundation for his success had been laid at home. The 25-year-old co-founder of artificial intelligence coding startup Cursor is set to see his fortune soar after SpaceX agreed to acquire Cursor parent company Anysphere in an all-stock deal worth $60 billion. The deal is expected to close later this year. The net worth of Cursor’s four co-founders is expected to be around $2.7 billion. But behind Sanger’s meteoric rise is a family story rooted in education, entrepreneurship and ambition.Born in the United States to Indian immigrant parents, Sanger grew up in a family where academic achievement and business success were strongly encouraged. Long before their son entered Silicon Valley, his parents had already built impressive careers. His father, Arvind Sanger, graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in science and technology and later moved to the United States. He later earned an MBA from Tulane University and built a successful career on Wall Street.Prior to founding investment firm Geosphere Capital in 2007, Arvind spent nearly 15 years as a respected oil services and equipment analyst at Deutsche Bank, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and other companies. From 2002 to 2007, he served as a portfolio manager at SAC Capital.Through Geosphere Capital, he focuses on investments in natural resources, industrial sectors and Indian equities. He has also served on the boards of educational and policy organizations such as Pratham USA and the Alexander Hamilton Society.Sangh’s mother Shilpa took a very different path. She grew up in a Marwari family in Mumbai, the eldest of five children, trained as a dentist and an orthodontist, and ran her own orthodontic clinic in the city for about 12 years. Her life changed after she met Arvind while traveling to New York for further education. The couple dated for 18 months before marrying and she moved to New York in 1999.Rather than requalify as an American dentist, Shilpa chose to focus on raising a family. Aman was born in 2000, and his sister was born about 18 months later. She later entered the entrepreneurial world herself, becoming an angel investor through the investment network Golden Seeds. She also holds business management roles at Geosphere Capital and is actively involved in philanthropic and educational activities through Pratham USA.Growing up in a family steeped in investment, entrepreneurship and professional achievement had a lasting impact on Aman.He started coding at the age of 14 and developed an early interest in technology. After attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he studied computer science from 2018 to 2022, while also playing squash and being active in college sports. Before starting his own company, Sanger gained experience through internships at Google and Bridgewater Associates. He also founded an artificial intelligence consulting firm before founding Cursor in 2022 with MIT classmates Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, and Arvid Lunnemark. The startup became one of Silicon Valley’s biggest artificial intelligence success stories. Cursor’s software helps developers write, edit and improve code using artificial intelligence and is currently used by millions of programmers at approximately 50,000 companies, including Nvidia, Adobe, Uber, Shopify and PayPal. The company says annualized revenue has exceeded $1 billion, helping attract billions of dollars in investment and attracting the attention of SpaceX.Forbes previously estimated Sanger’s wealth at about $1.3 billion based on his company shares. Planned acquisitions are expected to boost that figure significantly, to about $2.6 billion.
