Gragg reportedly died while trying to save his son during an incident in the 2600 block of MacArthur Boulevard on South Bend’s east side on Wednesday, June 10. At the time of the shooting, Gragg’s son was trying to sell Ford a watch as part of a deal he arranged through Facebook Marketplace, according to police.

The son claimed Ford pulled out a gun while looking at his watch, said he needed it and then tried to grab it from him. Gragg then got between her son and Ford, and eventually kicked Ford out of the home.

Investigators said surveillance video showed Ford shooting Gragg several times after she turned around and ran home. Police said Gragg was shot in the head.

Ford reportedly admitted to shooting Gragg during an interview with detectives.

The South Bend Police Department updated on Facebook, “Charges have been upgraded against the suspect arrested in last week’s shooting on MacArthur Boulevard. The victim of the June 10 shooting, 40-year-old Jean Gragg, died of her injuries over the weekend. As a result, charges against the suspect, 18-year-old John Ford, have been upgraded to reflect the circumstances of her death.”

Ford is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.

“Please remember that all persons are presumed innocent unless convicted in a court of law,” the post read.

Who is Jean Gragg?

Gragg’s obituary said she was killed despite her “fighting for her family.”

Gragg was born in South Bend on March 14, 1986 to Jay Dee Gragg, Jr. and Dawn (Gadacz) Gragg, a 2004 graduate of Washington High School. She has worked in catering and bartending events at Morris Performing Arts and as an office manager at H & R Block.

The obituary read: “Gene enjoyed reading, traveling with her son, camping, rafting and spending time with friends. She was a nurturer and if someone close to her was sick, you could count on her to take good care of you. Gene was a dedicated, wonderful mother, very loving and caring, always putting her son first until the end of her life.”

Gragg is survived by her son and father, Stephen Bailey; her fiancé Michael “Mickey” Murray; mother Dawn Gragg, father Jay Dee Gragg, Jr., brother Brian Haremza; aunt, Rebecca Eby; Jennifer Eby and Christopher Smith Smith) cousin; best friend Danielle McClellan, and very close friends Victoria and Monique Carlson.
