Musk owns about 38% of SpaceX, including stock options. His wealth increased dramatically when SpaceX became a public company. Although he is the world’s richest man, the amounts he donates tend to be small compared to his total wealth.
According to Business Insider, his largest recent donation was at the end of the year, when he donated approximately 210,000 Tesla shares, worth nearly $100 million, to an undisclosed charity.

The SEC filing said the donation was related to “year-end tax planning.” The document did not disclose which charities received Tesla stock. Charities that received the shares reportedly said they had no immediate plans to sell them. According to Business Insider, Musk’s wealth was estimated at hundreds of billions of dollars at the time of the donation, making the $100 million donation only a small portion of his total wealth.
How to donate to the Musk Foundation
In addition to direct donations, Musk also donates through the Musk Foundation, which handles most of his philanthropic efforts. Forbes reported that the Musk Foundation donated approximately $474 million to charities in 2024. However, Forbes said most of the money went to organizations controlled by Musk himself.
Where does most of Musk’s philanthropic money go?
The largest recipient of Musk Foundation funds in 2024 is an organization called The Foundation. In 2024, the foundation received approximately $370 million from the Musk Foundation. The foundation was created by Musk in 2021 to build and manage STEM-focused schools and eventually a university in Texas. Forbes reports that the $370 million donation is intended to support school operations and educational programs.
Musk has long shown an interest in education, having previously opened a nonprofit school in California called Ad Astra for his children and the children of SpaceX employees. The new Ad Astra school, located near the SpaceX facility in Texas, was originally planned to be a STEM-focused school. However, recent state documents reportedly show that the Texas facility is currently a licensed child care program for a small number of children. Musk has not publicly provided a major update on his college plans since 2023.
According to Forbes, the Musk Foundation’s second-largest donation in 2024 is a $35 million donation to Fidelity Charitable. Fidelity Charitable operates donor-advised funds, which allow donors to set aside funds for future charitable giving. Funds deposited into a donor-advised fund do not have to be immediately distributed to the charity. It’s unclear which charities will ultimately receive the $35 million.
Education, Healthcare and Housing Donations
The Musk Foundation’s third-largest donation was more than $7 million to Baylor Scott & White Healthcare. The health care organization is one of the largest not-for-profit health care systems in the United States. Forbes said Musk also donated millions of dollars to education, housing, health care and disaster relief organizations in 2024. According to Forbes, major recipients include the X Prize Foundation, Windward School, The Seton Fund, Austin Habitat for Humanity, Digital Harbor Foundation, The University of Texas at Austin and the St. Bernard Project.
These donations support causes such as STEM education, affordable housing, health care programs, innovation and disaster relief. The Musk Foundation has also donated to Jewish organizations such as the Los Angeles Holocaust Museum and the European Jewish Council. Forbes noted that the donations came after Musk faced criticism for allegedly making anti-Semitic comments on X, accusations he has repeatedly denied. Since 2010, the Musk Foundation has awarded more than $1.1 billion in charitable grants.
Questions about Musk’s charitable donations
Even after these donations, the foundation still holds assets worth about $14.7 billion. The foundation has faced criticism for allegedly failing to meet IRS requirements that private foundations distribute at least 5% of their assets each year. Critics argue that much of Musk’s philanthropy remains concentrated in organizations he controls.
Musk has yet to publicly address some recent criticism of the way his charitable giving is organized. In addition to philanthropy, Musk has invested heavily in politics. According to Politico, he donated approximately $290 million during the 2024 election cycle, mostly to support political causes and candidates. Politico also reported that Musk donated an additional $10 million to two major Republican super PACs late last year. These political donations are separate from his charitable contributions and do not count as charity.
