A U.S. official died under mysterious circumstances at a hotel in Myanmar, and a Thai woman was detained by local police as part of the investigation. Although the incident occurred weeks ago, the State Department has now confirmed the deaths and said it would not reveal any other details about the case. “Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones, we have no further information to provide at this time,” the State Department said in an emailed response to questions from The Associated Press. The man was found dead at the Sakura Apartment Hotel about two weeks ago, according to three people in Myanmar’s diplomatic community who were not authorized to discuss the case. The hotel, a long-term rental property popular with diplomats, business people and other international visitors, is about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) from the U.S. Embassy. The Thai Embassy in Yangon and the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs also declined to say whether they were providing consular support to the suspects or providing any other information. Managers at the Sakura Hotel also declined to comment when contacted by the agency.
