'They only speak for themselves': UK Sikh groups distance themselves from social media commentators Harman Kapoor, Bobby Singh

The British Gurdwara Federation issued a public clarification statement, and social media commentators Harman Kapoor and Bobby Singer does not represent Sikhism community, Sikh institution or any recognized Sikh representative body. The organizations said in a statement that neither man was authorized, appointed or authorized to speak on behalf of Sikhs. They stressed that views expressed by Kapoor, Singh or other independent commentators on social media should be viewed as personal and not the position of the wider Sikh community. The statement urged media organizations, public institutions and other stakeholders not to view the two men as representatives of Sikh views and to consider that Sikh positions emerge through collective deliberation and recognized Pan-Telite institutions rather than individual influencers or commentators. The clarification comes amid controversy surrounding comments and online activity related to the pair.Social media personality Bobby Singh has been criticized for comments he made on Instagram Live, with critics accusing him of expressing support for Vickrum Singh Digwa, the murderer of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, based on Sikh “brotherhood”. The comments sparked a backlash on social media and were cited by opponents as evidence that his views were not representative of the wider Sikh community.Harman Kapoor, a London restaurateur known for his outspoken views on Sikhism and community issues, has also been criticized in recent months for comments he made in interviews. Some Sikh groups believe his comments on issues such as kirpan and Sikh identity do not reflect mainstream Sikh views. The organizations said the clarification was issued to prevent misinformation within the Sikh community and to protect the integrity of Sikh institutions and collective decision-making processes.“The Sikh community has only one voice: the collective voice of the Pant people,” the statement said.
