The survey, conducted by Reuters and Ipsos, showed that only 35% of respondents approved of Trump’s performance in the White House. That number is close to the low of 34% in the April poll and close to the all-time low of 33% in December 2017 during Trump’s first term.

The Republican leader faces growing criticism over the Iran war and rising gasoline prices. Despite 100 days since the end of the war, Trump has been unable to reach a peace deal with Iran, and occasional outbreaks of conflict have caused energy prices to rise.

The survey showed that although oil prices have edged lower in recent weeks due to the possibility of an end to the war, some 59% of respondents said they expected gas prices to get worse next year.

Only 17% said the price would be better. The remaining respondents said they were unsure about the price.

On February 28, Trump teamed up with Israel to launch a military strike against Iran, shocking the world. Iran retaliated against US and Israeli targets in West Asia.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil passes, remains closed, affecting global energy prices.

70% disapprove of Trump’s handling of cost of living

The survey also showed that only 22% of American respondents approved of Trump’s handling of the cost of living for American families. 70% of the respondents clearly disapprove of the way Trump handles domestic issues.

The survey is a major setback for Trump, as his predecessor Joe Biden had a 29% approval rating and a 63% disapproval rating on the cost of living issue. Trump’s support looks weaker than that of Joe Biden, who has chosen to drop out of the 2024 US presidential race.

Biden has been battling high inflation for years, ultimately leading to the Democratic Party’s crushing defeat in the 2024 presidential election. Trump campaigned on a promise to tackle inflation, and persistently high fuel prices are hurting his party’s hopes of retaining control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.

Regarding the U.S. strike against Iran, 36% of Americans said they support the U.S. strike against Iran. Another 25% said the benefits of the strike were worth the costs.
