As Seattle prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Seattle’s iconic Space Needle now sports a soccer ball design, showcasing its role in the global event.
SEATTLE — As Seattle prepares to host games during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the city’s most recognizable landmark has been given a new look.
Officials with FIFA World Cup 26 in Seattle and the Space Needle on Thursday unveiled a redesigned roof atop the landmark building, transforming it into the appearance of a giant soccer ball overlooking the city’s skyline.
Organizers say the concept was created to welcome fans from around the world and emphasize Seattle’s role as one of the event’s host cities. The design was developed after discussions about how to create a different visual presentation than visitors had previously seen in Seattle.
The installation was created through a partnership between the Space Needle and FWC26 Seattle, and was implemented by Seattle-based Long Painting Company. Crews applied the custom pattern while working 605 feet above Seattle Center.
“With just days left until the world arrives in Seattle, this event embodies the energy build-out in our region,” said Peter Tomozawa, CEO of SeattleFWC26.
Officials said the project required detailed planning, specialized equipment and coordination with Space Needle staff to complete the modification safely while monitoring weather conditions.
The revamped roof is expected to remain a focal point of Seattle’s World Cup festivities as the city prepares to host six games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Organizers say the competition is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of tourists to the region and attract billions of viewers around the world.
Seattle is one of 16 North American cities chosen to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which officials say is the largest event in the tournament’s history.
