“He had second-degree burns over 22 percent of his body. They said he was in excruciating pain yesterday,” the victim’s mother said.
YUBA COUNTY, Calif. — A Northern California McDonald’s shift manager is recovering from second-degree burns to more than 22 percent of his body after police said he poured hot oil on him.
Jacob Smith, 20, was attacked Saturday at the restaurant where he worked, according to the Yuba City Police Department. Yuba City is located 40 miles north of Sacramento and has a population of approximately 70,000.
“My son was God-fearing. He would give anything to anybody. If he had $5 in his wallet and you needed it, he would give it to you,” Amber Smith said of her son, describing Jacob as a positive light in her life.
She said he is now trying to stay positive as he recovers from his injuries.
“He had second-degree burns over 22 percent of his body. They said yesterday he was in excruciating pain,” Smith said.
Police said officers responded Saturday after receiving a report that Jacobs had been assaulted by another employee.
“The victim was able to move around the bed, was able to communicate with them, but had significant burn marks on his upper body and facial area,” Yuba City Police Lt. Michael Bullard said.
Investigators say 23-year-old Jalani Bluett allegedly poured hot oil on Jacobs before leaving the restaurant before police arrived.
Shortly after Brutt left, the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office issued a missing persons flyer saying he was considered in danger due to the diagnosis and breach.
Bruter was later found and arrested by the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office shortly after midnight on June 1, police said.
Brutt is currently being held in the Sutter County Jail facing multiple charges. Police said investigators have not determined a motive for the attack.
“The arraignment was yesterday at the Sutter County Courthouse where he was asked to answer questions on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, rioting, aggravated felonious assault resulting in great bodily injury,” Bullard said. “He is currently being held in Sutter County without bail.”
Smith said her son is recovering and staying positive. she started a GoFundMe campaign to help pay his bills and said she was grateful for the support her son received from the community.
The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office said Brutt was initially reported missing by his family. The agency also acknowledged Brutt had a disability but declined to say what it was.
