Westbound I-90 closed for hours after semi truck fire near Cle Elum

A semi-truck fire has closed a major stretch of westbound I-90 near Cle Elum and potential bridge damage is being assessed.

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — A major stretch of westbound Interstate 90 remains closed after a semitrailer caught fire early Thursday morning near Cle Elum, prompting lengthy closures and concerns about possible bridge damage.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, westbound Interstate 90 is closed from milepost 106 in Ellensburg to milepost 86.6 near Cle Elum. The shutdown was first reported around 2:26 a.m.

Officials said the road was closed due to a semi-truck fire. There is currently no estimated time for the highway to reopen.

Traffic is being detoured onto Interstate 10 from Interstate 90 Exit 106. However, traffic officials are currently directing drivers to use US 97 and crews are continuing to respond.

In an update Thursday morning, Snoqualmie Pass officials said westbound Interstate 90 near Cle Elum will remain closed for several hours while crews clear the scene and assess potential damage from the fire to a nearby bridge.

No information has been released about injuries or the cause of the semi-truck fire.

Drivers heading west through the Cascade Mountains should expect significant delays and plan alternative routes until roads reopen.
