Renton police are preparing for a major security operation as the Belgian national soccer team plans to host the World Cup in the city.
RENTON, Wash. — One of the world’s top soccer teams is calling Renton home as it prepares for the World Cup, bringing excitement to fans and a major security operation for local police.
The Belgian national team will remain in Renton ahead of a game against Egypt in two weeks, making the city long known as the home of the Seattle Seahawks a temporary hub for international soccer.
For fans like Renton resident Joshua Torres, the team’s arrival is a rare opportunity.
“I’m very excited for Belgium to be here,” Torres said.
Torres has been playing football for nearly three decades and said the sport still holds a special place in his life. He hopes to catch a glimpse of the team while training nearby.
“I’m actually a big fan of the Belgian national team,” Torres said. “So, if they’re going to be here, I hope I can get a glimpse of them and maybe go to a practice or even just see them, that would be awesome.”
As fans look forward to seeing international stars up close, the Renton Police Department is preparing the logistics to keep the team safe.
“This is certainly unique. It doesn’t happen very often,” said Deputy Chief Ryan Rutledge. “This could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in my career.”
Renton Police will serve as the lead security agency during the team’s stay in June, coordinating coverage at multiple locations.
“We can have up to 15 different safe spots,” Rutledge said. “Whether it’s at the Sounders’ training facility, at the hotel, or during escorts between locations.”
The department received a federal grant to cover World Cup-related security costs, allowing more officers from surrounding agencies to assist. Police said the added duties will not affect 911 response times.
“We really want to make sure the community is safe, all the fans coming into town are safe, all the players are safe,” Rutledge said.
The team’s presence also brings football’s global appeal to the local area.
“Beautiful game. That’s it. It was a beautiful game,” Torres said. “I think it really has something to offer everyone.”
City officials say 15 World Cup watch parties are planned at the site Heritage Square Located in downtown Renton, the opening day event for the new space will be June 6 from 1 to 8 p.m. City officials said the space will become a permanent fixture and will host a variety of events throughout the summer and year-round.
Belgium will arrive in the town on Monday, June 8, RPD reports.
