WASHINGTON – Building 87-foot-tall steel arena for NFL Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Freedom 250 event has become its own attraction. Tourists and locals alike stopped to view and take photos of the massive structure. Tower above the White House.
Crews are working to prepare for a series of games scheduled for June 14 on the South Lawn of the White House, which would have been President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday and Flag Day.
“It’s crazy. It’s absolutely crazy,” said Steve, a Washington, D.C., native who came to take photos of the arena. so. “I’m speechless.”
He said he had no idea what the UFC event had to do with celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary.
Jeff and Claudette, another couple visiting from Kentucky, called the construction “overwhelming.”
“It’s still under construction and there’s a lot of stuff, but I think it’s going to look beautiful when they’re done,” he said. “It’ll look better when it’s gone.”
Until Tuesday, the project had been a temporary structure. The UFC pledged to spend $700,000 to restore the White House South Lawn after it was demolished.
That changed when Trump floated the idea of making the arena permanent in a video posted on TikTok from the Oval Office.
“We’re building something in front of the White House that’s going to be very attractive to a lot of people,” the president said in the video. “There’s going to be a big UFC fight on June 14th. I’m looking at it and maybe we’ll never take it down.”
Trump compared the building to the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
“It was supposed to come down right after the Expo, and then they said we kind of like it, let’s keep it a little longer,” Trump said. “Then they said let’s keep it longer, longer, longer. But they never took it down.”
The UFC said they expect about 4,300 seats on the White House lawn for invited guests and that tickets will not be sold to the general public. A giant screen will be set up near the Washington Monument so that up to 100,000 spectators can watch the game.
Jeff and Claudette said the video the president posted on TikTok was a joke.
“It’s his ability to piss off liberals,” Jeff said. “He’s just playing. He’s not going to put this aside.”
“He just wanted people to have a good time,” Claudette added, praising the president’s beautification efforts throughout the area.
After many visits to the nation’s capital, Claudette said this was the best Washington, D.C., experience ever.
“We feel safe,” she said.
Others, like Darlene from Baltimore, said they took the president’s comments very seriously.
