Lawsuit: Florida family ate bug-infected can of spaghetti

A Florida mom says she and her young daughter ate a can of pasta and found live worms in it.

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. — A Florida woman is suing Campbell Soup Co. and Walmart after she says she found live parasites in a can of pasta that she and her young daughter had eaten.

Mary Hubbard and her infant daughter’s father, Gregory Lovell, filed the federal lawsuit on June 2. In court documents, her name is only PL. The family is from Okeechobee, Florida.

According to the complaint, Hubbard purchased the can of spaghetti at a local Walmart in June 2024. On June 6 of that year, she served spaghetti as a meal to herself and her daughter. It wasn’t until both had eaten part of the food that she noticed what appeared to be worms moving actively inside the can. She said she filmed the contamination in multiple videos.

Campbell Soup Company, headquartered in Camden, New Jersey, manufactures and distributes SpaghettiO.

The lawsuit accuses Campbell Soup and Walmart of failing to adequately inspect and test products for contamination, failing to maintain adequate quality control and food safety measures, and placing unreasonably hazardous foods into commerce without warning consumers.

The health consequences described in the lawsuit are serious. Hubbard claimed she suffered from parasitic infections, sepsis, liver damage and chronic post-traumatic stress disorder. She also stated that she required intravenous iron infusions to treat anemia. Her daughter allegedly suffered vomiting, diarrhea and a parasitic infection, requiring prescription medication, as well as suffering psychological harm.

The two are said to still be receiving medical and mental health care.

The lawsuit accuses Campbell Soup and Walmart of negligence, strict liability and violating federal food safety laws by selling adulterated food. The family argued that the companies failed to properly inspect and test the products before they hit shelves.

Campbell Soup and Walmart had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.
