BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A man who took hostages inside a California building that houses a bank branch and a school district office was shot and killed by the FBI, police said Wednesday.
The Bakersfield Police Department said in a statement that the suspect was killed in an “officer-involved shooting involving FBI personnel.” The standoff ended about 12 hours after officers were called to the building, police said.
All hostages were released and no one was injured, police said.
The standoff in downtown Bakersfield began Tuesday afternoon when police responded to a call about a bomb threat at the Chase Bank building.
Bakersfield police said the man locked himself inside with several people. The two were released on Tuesday after negotiations with authorities.
During the hostage situation, nearby buildings, including City Hall and police headquarters, were evacuated and some roads were temporarily closed.
Police established a cordon around the area and warned the public to stay away. The police department’s crisis negotiation team has made contact with the suspect by phone.
“We have every resource available to resolve this matter as safely as possible,” Bakersfield Police Sgt. Eric Celedon said Tuesday.
A JPMorgan spokesman said the bank branch, located on the ground floor of the building, was currently empty.
Jacob Davidson, a live-streaming host known as Dad’s Gone Live, was in his family tattoo shop a block from the bank when he started getting calls about bomb threats.
“I walked into the parking lot of the bank and saw the police going into the back of the bank. It was the largest police presence I’ve ever seen in this town,” Davidson said.
On Tuesday night, his livestream captured a woman rocking back and forth through a window of the building before crouching beneath the window. Two hands are then seen waving.
