Driver charged with murder in Parkland teen’s death; suspected shooter on the run

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — Police say the woman was driving a car connected to the business 17-year-old boy shot to death Braylon Diaz was charged with murder Tuesday.

On the evening of May 24, Braylon and his girlfriend Katelyn Zuniga were walking home from Braylon’s father’s house when a car stopped in front of them. The person in the back passenger seat told Braylen to come closer, but Braylen refused, according to charging documents.

The passenger told Voight-Barr to reverse so they could get closer to the couple, which she did, court documents say.

The passenger then asked for Braylen’s necklace.

Braylen asked Caitlin to stay behind as he handed them the necklace. The passenger in the back seat then picked up the necklace and shot Braylon in the abdomen at close range.

Caitlin called 911 and the vehicle took off.

Detectives canvassed the area and obtained surveillance video showing the vehicle. Detectives also received video from Parkland residents, including video from one home showing people coming and going in cars.

A relative of one of the people in the car was interviewed and confirmed that Walter-Barr was the driver at the time of the shooting.

Detectives compared Wattbar’s photo to a photo of the woman seen on security video.

Waterbar’s vehicle was found abandoned on Federal Road. Documents inside the car included the names of Waterbar and her boyfriend, according to charging documents.

Cell phone data placed Walter-Barr and the suspected shooter at the location of the shooting.

On May 27, Voight-Barr called police and confirmed she was driving at the time. She also confirmed the name of the shooter. She said she didn’t know the shooter’s intentions at the time. She also said she tried to get out of the car to help Braylon, but the gunman pulled her back and hit her before telling her to drive him to Federal Way.

Waterbar also said there was no one else in the vehicle, contradicting the statement and security video.

Waterbar and her boyfriend arrested In the early morning of June 1, while driving in Snohomish County. Charging documents say they found a written statement in that car “as if she had a pre-written guide of what she wanted to say during her last phone interview.” Another entry shows what detectives believe and what plans are underway.

Detectives also found a 9mm gun and the clothing they were wearing on some surveillance videos. It appeared to detectives that they were moving/relocating.

Walter-Barr’s boyfriend was indicted Tuesday on Oregon fugitive charges and charged with criminal mischief, burglary and grand larceny. He has not yet been charged in the shooting death of Braylon Diaz.
