Carpenter reportedly said in a statement to the court that she experienced “severe and ongoing emotional distress” as a result of the stalking.
WASHINGTON — A Los Angeles County judge has issued a temporary restraining order against pop star Sabrina Carpenter, barring a man who stalked her and tried to enter her Hollywood Hills home, according to multiple media reports.
According to reports, from nbc news, British Broadcasting Corporation Monday’s order bans 31-year-old William Applegate, her sister Sarah Carpenter and her sister’s partner, who also lives at Carpenter’s home, from coming within 100 yards of the home.
Carpenter filed for a civil harassment restraining order in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday, alleging that Applegate’s behavior escalated over several weeks, culminating in an attempt to force open her front door on May 23.
Carpenter reportedly said in a statement to the court that she experienced “severe and ongoing emotional distress” as a result of what she described as a pattern of unlawful behavior.
“His pattern of stalking, intrusion and surveillance has caused me severe and ongoing emotional distress, and I fear what he might do if he were not restrained by the courts,” Carpenter wrote.
According to court documents, Carpenter claimed that starting around April 20, Applegate showed up at her home multiple times. She said he showed up uninvited multiple times, claiming to know her and insisting she was waiting for him.
In the May 23 incident, Carpenter claims Applegate entered a neighboring home, walked to her front door, tried to open it, rang the doorbell and refused to leave until police arrived.
“(He) made up the outrageous and completely false claim that he knew me and that I was waiting for him,” Carpenter wrote. “This was a complete lie.”
In addition to the plea, Carpenter’s legal team submitted a statement from a Los Angeles police detective supporting the restraining order. Detectives wrote that Applegate allegedly assaulted a security guard who confronted him outside the home.
Images captured by Ring security cameras reportedly showed a man, identified in court documents as Applegate, standing at Carpenter’s front door as a security guard with a flashlight approached.
Carpenter claimed that Applegate returned less than 24 hours after the May 23 incident and stayed outside her residence for several hours. She said he returned the next day and parked his car outside the hotel.
The singer described the alleged break-in attempt as “one of the most disturbing violations of personal safety and privacy” she has ever experienced.
Carpenter, 27, has become one of the world’s most successful pop artists over the past year, performing hits including “Espresso” and “Manchild” at Coachella and other major venues.
It’s unclear whether Applegate will face criminal charges in connection with the May 23 incident, but the detective’s statement confirmed that the Police Department has submitted a criminal case of trespassing and other charges to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges will be filed.
Applegate is expected to appear in court on June 18 in the case.
