A driver accidentally accelerated while parked and crashed into the Emerald Court Apartments in Des Moines Saturday night, officials said.
DES MOINES, Wash. — A car crashed into a Des Moines apartment building Saturday night, displacing several residents but causing no injuries.
On May 30, just after 9 p.m., officers with the Des Moines Police Department responded to a report that a vehicle had crashed into the Emerald Court apartment complex.
Investigators determined the driver accidentally accelerated while trying to stop the vehicle, causing severe damage to the building. Police said there were no signs of damage and no injuries were reported.
The crash affected four apartments, displacing eight adults and one child.
The American Red Cross dispatches Disaster Action Team volunteers to the scene to provide emergency assistance, including assessing critical needs for shelter, food and clothing.
Multiple apartment units have been secured while the city of Des Moines Engineering Department conducts a structural assessment of the building. Structural assessments will help determine when displaced residents can safely return to their homes.
