A manhunt is underway after a Virginia deputy was killed and another injured while responding to a welfare check call.
CARROLL COUNTY, Va. — Manhunt underway in Virginia Deputy Sheriff Killed, Another Injured Friday night during a welfare check.
Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home on Fancy Gap Highway just before 9:30 p.m. ET after a family member requested a welfare check.
Investigators said the officers encountered Michael Puckett, who reportedly fired at them. Deputies fired back.
One deputy died from his injuries. His identity has not been released. The second deputy, who was wearing a ballistic vest and was struck, was considered stable while undergoing a medical evaluation.
Puckett fled the scene and remained at large as of Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
Law enforcement officials warned that Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or knows where he may be is advised not to approach him and call 911 immediately.
“My office is closely monitoring this tragic event,” Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger wrote on social media. “I encourage anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to contact Virginia State Police. My thoughts are with the deputy’s family and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office as we resolve this horrific situation.”
