Washington – over 400,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee The vehicles are being recalled due to a software glitch that could delay side airbag deployment in a crash.
FCA US is recalling 419,035 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L models because software in these vehicles may cause the side airbag pressure sensors to last longer than they should, shortening the life of the sensors. The software error is located in the occupant restraint controller module.
Faulty sensors can cause air bags to delay deployment in some crashes and may not comply with federal safety regulations. It also increases the risk of injury.
The recall covers vehicles produced between May 16, 2022 and October 9, 2025.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a recall notice on May 21 that only 1% of the recalled vehicles were suspected to be defective.
If a car’s sensors are faulty, consumers may not see warning signs, according to the notice. However, in the event of a malfunction, the airbag warning light in the instrument cluster will remain illuminated and a chime will be heard when starting the car.
FCA US said it became aware of the defect in February 2023 after receiving a small number of warranty claims related to door airbag pressure sensors.
Starting the week of June 11, consumers who own recalled vehicles will be notified to go to their dealers for a free software update to fix the defect.
