Father who went to work early for ultrasound exam dies in Longview implosion

LONGVIEW, Wash. — A father who was preparing for an ultrasound of his third child failed to arrive after he was killed Tuesday. One of Nippon Dynawave’s storage tanks implodes in Longview.

He is survived by his wife and two children. The family also has a third child on the way.

An attorney for the family said Jared went to work early on the day of the implosion so he could accompany his wife, Mackenzie, to her prenatal check-up. When Jared didn’t arrive, Mackenzie went to the appointment with her sister and saw their unborn child for the first time via an ultrasound.

“He went to work early that day so he could leave early to go have his first ultrasound and see his baby. He didn’t go home,” attorney Simeon Osborn said.

Ammons works at the plant where an approximately 600,000-gallon chemical tank containing white liquor, a mixture of sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfide and disodium carbonate used in the papermaking process, imploded around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, but officials are still working to determine the cause.

Osborne said Jared had told his wife there were “dangerous conditions” at the factory, and more families were coming forward with concerns.

On Thursday, officials announced that eight workers were confirmed dead and three employees were still missing. Ammons was one of the victims, and his death shocked the small community.
