Robert Anthony Trevino, 22, was charged April 30 with vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. Trevino was arrested on May 27 after a warrant was issued.
RENTON, Wash. — A man has been charged and arrested. In connection with a fatal school bus crash in Renton in 2023.
Robert Anthony Trevino, 22, was charged April 30 with vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.
Trevino was initially arrested at the time of the crash on suspicion of driving under the influence on December 19, 2023. Trevino was booked back into the King County Jail Wednesday on charges of vehicular homicide and assault, according to jail records.
King County prosecutors said in charging documents that Trevino had items commonly associated with drug use in the car at the time of the crash, including aluminum foil, a lighter, a mini-flashlight, baggies and a hypodermic needle. According to charging documents, blood tests taken shortly after the accident showed that Trevino had methamphetamine and fentanyl in his system. The test results were returned to police on February 4.
A responding officer reported that Trevino’s eyes “appeared droopy” and that he was not “in the zone.” [his] Right mind. “
The victim, Ashley Michelle O’Neal, was in the car with Trevino when the accident occurred. Prosecutors allege Trevino passed another vehicle at speeds in excess of 70 mph. Prosecutors said Trevino lost control of the vehicle while making a turn, causing the vehicle to crash into a school bus.
The accident caused extensive damage. O’Neal suffered serious injuries from damage to the passenger side of his Chevrolet Cavalier and was pronounced dead at the scene.
“He did have a suspended driver’s license, so there were multiple reasons why he shouldn’t have been on the road that day,” said Detective Kevin Lane of the Renton Police Department.
The second person in the car was seriously injured and suffered a broken back. The school bus was carrying a driver and three children and no one was injured.
When Trevino was arrested on April 30, 2026, there were six pending cases in other jurisdictions. Three of the cases (two in Aberdeen and one in Pierce County) involved possession of a controlled substance and had active bench warrants.
For O’Neill’s family, the arrest comes as a relief after more than two years of waiting.
“It’s nice to see someone take responsibility for what our family has been through and what we’ve lost,” said Alyssa Collier, O’Neal’s sister.
Trevino remains in custody at the King County Jail. Washington state requires his bail be set at $100,000.
