WASHINGTON — A massive American flag 300 feet wide and 150 feet tall has been flown hoover dam Held in Nevada as part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
The installation goes up on Memorial Day to honor the men and women who gave their lives serving our country, and will remain lit every night through July 4th. The display uses more than 550 automated LED lights and is powered entirely by the dam’s hydroelectric power.
According to officials, the American flag weighs approximately 2,000 pounds and took five days to sew. It has previously been used for football games by the Indianapolis Colts and Las Vegas Raiders.
“As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, Nevada is proud to help tell the story of the innovation, exploration and progress that shaped our nation, from the Hoover Dam to a growing technology and infrastructure sector to world-class tourism,” Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo said in a news release. “Nevada has always played an important role in American history. For generations, Hoover Dam has been one of the greatest engineering achievements in American history. It represents American determination, ingenuity, hard work and willingness to take on challenges that once seemed impossible.”
Built during the Great Depression, Hoover Dam is one of the United States’ greatest infrastructure achievements, helping to generate hydroelectric power 1.3 million people In Nevada, Arizona and California. More than 21,000 workers work on the dam, which currently stands 726 feet high and has a crest span of 1,244 feet.
